1981 Clemson Wofford Jim Phillips in his prime

Nov 11, 2021, 6:29 AM

Jim Phillips in his prime was great. Great solid announcer with a great voice and a great call of the game. Bonus points if you can find Hunter Renfrow's dad Tim Renfrow on the Wofford defense.

game. The Billy Lott TD run is absolute PBP perfection.

The shame is no one can tell you where the tapes of all those years are. So many great games. Clemson was shortsighted in not archiving them. And the radio network, owned by then WFBC in Greenville, has no answer

Tigers in possession at the 26 yard line of the Irish. Out it comes, Billy Lott on a misdirect, he keeps. Lott to the the 20, 15, Lott at the 10, the 5…Touchdown!

Well there’s a lot of Orange in South Bend, Indiana and right now it’s all on it’s feet. As Billy Lott rolled to his right, it was run all the way.

That’s all I can remember but there another sentence or 2 after that I’d like to hear.

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

Thanks for posting! I remember listening to that game from our radio in the living room as we did most games in the 70s and 80s. It was tighter than I expected and Wofford had a RB named Wade Lang who gave us fits. I remember my dad complaining after the game that it was going to be a long year lol! Funny thing about Lang is that Easley played Spartanburg later that year at Spartanburg. Spartanburg used Wofford's football stadium back then. When we arrived in the locker room to get dressed, I looked up after sitting down to put on my uniform and I was sitting in front of Lang's locker.

Thanks for posting, love the old films. By the way, I found Hunter's dad Tim, with his helmet on he looks just like him.

I was a sophomore at that game. Wake up at 8:00, get dressed, eat at Harcomb, drink a few cocktails, tailgate with friends, and go watch the Tigers play. Aahhh... The good ole days.........
By the way, I'm the chick magnet on the left.

I enjoyed his last years even more.

Loved the more mature announcers like Jim, Bob Fulton and Larry Munson. They didn't sugarcoat and called it like it is. You could just turn on the radio and instantly tell if their team was winning by tone of their voice.

the Running Down the Hill were better than anything I have seen this year. And that was against Wofford.

The Hill now is just a shame.***
