For the anti-CFP expansion-ers

Jan 18, 2022, 9:09 AM

I'll bet you tuned in to the "bad" games of the NFL this weekend. You were loaded up with beer and party mix and wings, sent your wife off to the kitchen, and kicked back in your EZ chairs, even if by half-time you were fiddling around with something else.

That's the point of it all. Marketing, local teams, every geographic area of the country hyper-tuned in, advertising dollars, ultra-hype and talking heads, hope-fueled fandom. Revenues (over bowls) will only go up, and be spread out too. It's entertainment and btw, pretty much CFB now, even more so than ever.

The argument of "bad match-ups" is a sieve. It's all about excitement and entertainment for all the country, much like March Madness has become (with all it's blow-outs). And with only four teams, you basically eliminate the chance of everyone's favorite story - Cinderella.

We need an 8 or 12 team playoff, quit worshiping one conference and conceding to basically one team, and spread the wealth and enthusiasm across the fruited plain.

As for "too many games" argument, don't try this. Just knock the season back a game if you have to, and proceed into the playoffs, just like the NFL.

Do you want to watch the championship game with both starting QBs opting out and several star players refusing to play? Fifteen games are to much to ask of players who put their health on the line every game. It will not work. College players can not end their season in February and begin spring ball 30 days later. You also will extend the season
Into two academic semesters.

15 games is too much? It's been that way for 7 years or so now.

12 game season ends late Nov, then one off week, this is same for all. Start playoff early Dec. Natty by New Years. Where do you get Feb from? Opt outs is a completely separate discussion to this matter .In fact opt outs are mainly happening because of cheap, meaningless bowls anyway

1. players are not opting out of playoff games so we wont see your sky is falling idea that we will see a championship with two back up qbs
2. 15 games are already happening (for 2 teams)
3. If you we're being honest - being a student athlete is a 24/7/365 job for 3-5 years. One week more of a season (for two teams) is hardly different.

When you have the players (including Clemson players) saying they don't want to play more games, you listen. Does anyone want to see a team full of backups playing? You are looking at players' strikes if no one is listening. Mark it down. All of the details need to be worked out before expansion occurs. The recent chaos incurred by lack of organization and management by all involved should have been a lesson learned.

expansion; however, I favored an eight-team playoff from the beginning.

That was due to my belief if one conference, notably the SEC or B1G, started having more than one team in the group of four too often, the remaining P5's would revolt. In fact there were subtle threats from a couple of commissioners about such. My thinking has been if there are two great teams, such as we saw in Bama and UGA this year from one conference, then the expanded version could allow for it without much ado.

Additionally, I believe the CFP would have to tweak inclusion requirements, such as participation in and/or winning conference titles in consideration of a team like ND which doesn't play in such. Further, with the NIL and transfer portal upon us, the expanded playoff may counter to a degree against those two bugbears. My version would have the first rounds hosted by the higher ranked teams with the semi's and final at pre-designated bowls.

Nevertheless, at my advanced age I have tended toward passivity in deference to our younger folks, who will have a lot more time to deal with the matter than I! lol

What hartins is saying is similar to my own thoughts, but my choice would be a 6 team playoff to allow for a conference that may have two dominate teams, and most of the time that is unusual with the exception of the SEC in some seasons, not all. But, mostly every playoff season we've had, the best team in the country is in those 4 teams, and that team on a bad day would beat any team in the country.

Expanding the playoffs with more than 6-8 teams would be all about the money the folks that sponsor these playoff game at their venues wherever they may be. It wouldn't be about displaying the best two college FB teams in the country. Heck, Vegas odds makers can about tell us who the best two teams in the country are, and who would win if everything went exactly to way the formula they used to pick the winner.

That is why it's always a good idea to play the game, bc even a perfect formula can get squashed the way Clemson squashed Bama 44-16 to what was suppose to have been the best offense in the history of Bama FB. But in 2018, Clemson defense was better than any offense that Bama had ever had, and true freshman QB Trevor Lawrence running the Clemson offense was better than the Bama defense.

That's right, on that day, 1-7-2018, the best offense in Bama's history of college FB, run into a Clemson defense that was the best defense in college FB. And then, the Clemson offense led by true freshman QB Trevor Lawrence, slaughtered as usual a stout Bama defense. But Vegas did pick Bama and Clemson as being the best two teams in college FB, they were just a little confused on who the best team was, but that was the only break down in the formula they use that is so, so close most of the time, and if they weren't, they would be broke, and out of business!!!

17 games

Jan 18, 2022, 9:51 AM

That's how many games any team could potentially play in 1 season. Today, that number is 15. That's already a high number and was raised as a concern at the birth of the CFP. If 17 is too many games for 18-22 year-olds to play, we'll have to cut into the regular season games.

Let's think about the implications there. Who loses? Well, it's probably schools like Charleston Southern, Furman, Presbyterian and Coastal Carolina; as they will miss out on that paycheck game that is so critical to their continued operation. Clemson would also lose a home game and all of the revenue that brings in to the university and the town.

Everybody would need to cut a game or 2 out of their regular season. Every Power 5 school and every Group of 5 school would need to lose 1-2 games because they could potentially make it into the expanded CFP and make a run. That's 125 schools that will need to lose regular season games to eliminate the possibility of them having their players play 17 games in a season. So, call it 62 games eliminated if they need to drop 1 regular season game or 125 games if 2 games need to be dropped. How much lost revenue is that for everybody involved? Teams like Clemson and Alabama could recover because they're going to make the playoffs and probably even host a game or two at home. But how about Central Michigan, Toledo, Indiana or Nebraska? They've just lost games with nothing in return but maybe a fun time watching the Expanded College Football Playoffs.

Personally, I think it's ridiculous. We maybe needed a 4 team playoff once or twice in the past 50 years to decide a champion. We certainly don't need 6 or 12 teams to figure it out. But, since the NCAA isn't affiliated with the CFP, there's no one to speak on behalf of the student athletes. Those same student athletes that wanted to get paid are very likely about to find out what it means to be rode hard and put up wet.

This what I've been saying, also there will be opt outs in the playoffs, guaranteed. Guys wanting "to get ready for the draft" will not want to play 4-5 extra games.

They will when the inevitable profit share with the players happens. When this new multi bajillion dollar deal goes into place you can bet your bottom dollar it will include pay for players, at least the playoff teams.

I don't doubt that it happens. Everything needs to be worked out in detail before more changes in CFB occur. Look at the absolute mess that ill preparation by everyone involved has caused with recent changes. Jim Phillips is 100% right in his outlook.

I've been saying it for a year, moodytiger. It seems that Jim Phillips, and possibly the Big 10 Commissioner, are the only people listening.

Replace conference championship games (a hodgepodge today of meaningful/meaningless plus rematches) with a first round of 8 - 5 regular season conference champs plus 3 at-large picks. Doesn't add a single game to anyone's schedule, improves the regular season without the need for divisions, and wraps as we do now with New Years-ish and 2nd Monday in January. Voila'.

We would have easily been one of the 3 at-large selections, likely the #3 seed based on the last CFP ranking prior to the CCGs. And if we were to award the top 4 seeds with hosting, we would have hosted Iowa State, the Big 12 regular season champ last year at #6.

Point for me and I would definitely watch but it’s like NFL. I do not believe there are 8 teams that legitimately can win the national championship. Definitely be some bad games. Like last night I tuned in early but after 21-0 I quickly tuned out.

Multiple wild card teams have won the Super Bowl in the NFL. There not any reason to think the 5-12 ranked teams in college football have any chance whatsoever at winning even a single game, much less 2 or 3 games in order to become champions. If its just going to be a pointless money grab go ahead and allow 32 teams in and let them play til February. Think of the revenue!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

well, i for one was set to watch a weekend of good football,

Jan 18, 2022, 12:12 PM

but the good football didn't happen. My fault for not planning to do something else. If those extra games weren't scheduled I'd have planned to do something. So yes, it does make a difference.
