12 Team Playoff

Oct 25, 2022, 8:13 PM

Have you stopped to think about how less stressful it is going to be when CFP moves to 12 teams? We should not have to worry about being excluded.

If you're not in the top 4 you'll be excluded. The route to the championship game will drain the life out of the lower 8. There may be a rare upset or two, but the drain of three playoff games will take to much of a toll. Or maybe, I'm wrong, but I never am except when I am.

IDK. I think teams seeded 5-8 have a decent chance (specifically the 5 and 6 seeds) and here's why.

5-8 will get to host a "Playoff" game against a 9-12 ranked team - potentially a conference championship game loser, a team from the AAC/Sun Belt/whatever G5, or just a higher-ranked non-champ.

If you're the 5 or 6, there's a solid chance that means you were a 1-loss non-champion (think this year like a Tenn/Mich/Wake type of team, or the loser of a championship game like if UGA gets to the SEC Champ game undefeated then loses to Bama, something like that). After winning at home, you then get to go to a bowl game (as of now) against the 3 or 4 team, who might not be better, but won their conference (Pac 12 or Big 12 Champ). If you ask me, in any given year that's a toss-up at worst.

You then get to the semifinals. So yes, while your path has taken you through 2 additional teams, you have gotten to play 1) at home and 2) against a team you're likely better than. Now you're in the "Top 4" and playing a 1 or 2 seed, barring upsets. And we've seen plenty of examples of higher-ranked teams losing.

You've also had plenty of time off to regroup from all those games. Right now, discussions center around early December for the first round of games, New Year's holiday for the quarterfinals, and semis early January. There will be 10-14 days between all those games.

I certainly would want to be in the Top 4, no doubt, but I don't think being 5, 6, or 7 is the worst thing ever. I bet we will see some 5/6 teams win a championship or two.

Just my two cents.

Seeds 5-12 will have to play two extra games beyond where we are now - potentially 17 games in a season. Considering how spent players are now after the final, at 15 max, I just don't see how this bodes well other than the extra revenue those games will produce.

I'd like to see college football take two steps when implementing this. 1) Eliminate OT's during the regular season. Nobody likes ties, but those OT's take a toll, and standings and seeding can easily accommodate putting ties back into the mix. Games are long enough already. 2) Eliminate the Conference championship games and let the regular season determine a league champion. Conferences for years prior had no issue declaring a champion even though all teams didn't play each other. The SEC, the B1G, the Pac - they all did this. If the top 6 conference champions get an auto berth and the remaining 6 are at-large, CCG's lose some of their necessity. It would free up a week for many top teams to ready up for the playoffs, and would take us back to 16 games max.

That stress of having to win every game is what made college ball so great

Agreed. 9-7 NFL teams making the playoffs takes a lot of the fun out of watching

The day the players start to think that is the day we start losing. Stay hungry.

Win 'em all and you get a bye.
Lose one and your in but need some help to get a bye.
Lose two and you need some help.

Playoff club, the added physical and mental stress on player, coaches and the prospect that the SEC and Big will be getting much larger portion of the playoff money extending the gap between them and the ACC even more?

Right now there are six equal portions of playoff money to be awarded to each team in each game. All first rounders get 16th of the total, the two progressing to the final game get the other third of the total which gives each of them 2/6th of the purse or 1/3. When Bama plays UGA for the championship the SEC receives the 2/6ths, equaling 1/3rd for their participation in the first round then another 2/6ths equaling another 1/3rd for the final game, win or lose.

Sure the B1G and SEC are licking their chops for expansion. If the other conferences by into it for a minor increase they will be splitting a much smaller pot.

Imo, ACC, those remaining in the Big 12 and PAC should carefully consider the potential growth of the gap between them and the media favorites. I wish everyone would reconsider what adding more games to students who already have a plate filled with academics, athletics and attempts to etch our some form of a social life.

Sharing the glory of making the playoff and thereby watering down the status by adding chump teams for the big boys to practice on is not worth the cost of the drawbacks to an expanded playoff.

With a 12 team playoff, what two ( eventually four ) SEC teams will be left out?
