I hope he improves 150% over the off season & turns out to be an incredible QB. Pittsburg QB Kenny Pickett wax horrible for a couple years but turned it around so let’s hope & have faith for a miracle!

Yes sir, I think that all of us are hoping to see the best DJ back on the field in 2022. The DJ that we saw behind center in 2021, he wasn't anything close to the DJ that we saw in the two full games that we saw him play in 2020 when Trevor was out recovering from covid 19 injury. The 2020 DJ that we saw, we can win the big games with, and I believe that he must lose some weight to get back to that 2020 DJ Uiagalelei....

Agree! If DJ5 does not step it up substantially, he could become a back-up. He must execute in 2022!
Clemson will have three (3) Five Star QB's on the roster.
Cade is on campus as a Freshman and Hunter Johnson as a 6th year Senior!
Plus the other good QB's on roster. DJ will not be able to struggle through the season this year.

I wish DJ all the best, but he really has to live up to expectations this year, or be replaced.

Yes I told friends last season he is too thick. Obvious he had put on weight. You could see it in his speed. If you go back and watch the games with BC and Norte Dame you can see a difference.

Re: I had an econ class in AG Center, 1983

Feb 3, 2022, 12:52 PM

In the 70s and 80s the milkshakes were sold in the lobby of Newman Hall. It is connected to the P&A building (Poole Ag Center) by a breezeway so a lot of people thought they were one and the same. Milkshakes along with ice cream in cones and cups and sundaes, etc are now sold in the 55 Exchange in the Hendrix Student Center. The ice cream is still made by students and students staff the 55 Exchange.

Re: I had an econ class in AG Center, 1983

You are correct. To think I went there all those years and didn’t know that was Newman. I always called it P&A. But I knew it was across the breezeway in a different building.

Re: I had an econ class in AG Center, 1983

Feb 4, 2022, 9:11 AM

I worked in the creamery in Newman as a student. It was a larger operation than now. But the students do still make the ice cream and operate the 55 Exchange store with some assistance from one staff advisor and one faculty member who stay pretty much in the background.

I'll ditto what unfinished_sentenc said: What other QB was going to play in place of DJU?

Now some more: The Clemson coaches would have to be A_ _. H_ L_S. to publicly bash any player.

Fortunately, Clemson coaches are classy guys and won't make those kinds of childish and counterproductive public statements.

I'm betting (as another poster also mentioned in this thread) that with better health, better WR play, improved RB play (including better blocking from the RBs) and the threat of a good running game to keep the defenses off balance, and a much better overall OL performance, DJU will have a terrific year.

But losing a dozen lbs. (or two) can only help things for DJU further.

DJ will have to be the most improved college player in the country in 2022 to hold on to the starting QB position. Mobility, accuracy and ability to audible and lead the Offense on the field are big issues.

I have been saying the same thing for months(after Cade committed). That's why I said dju should stock up on his Dr pepper. (A la Fansville punter). His weight loss program has nothing to do with his inability to spontaneously read a formation, route coverage, or rpo. He is a robot out there and that is one tough habit to change. Good luck to him with or without the Tigers.

Great to hear, always thought his problems last year were 100% mental we know he is talented as all get out. He went through a lot of off the field stuff then had all kinds of “fans” telling him constantly how bad he sucked when he’s just a kid. But sounds like he is focused to come back stronger then ever, if he ups his agility while keeping some muscle he will be unstoppable

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly. His physical attributes weren’t the problem.

Feb 3, 2022, 12:58 AM

The mental part of his game is what is holding him back - severely. It seemed as though he could not read defenses, had no pocket presence, could not anticipate routes by WRs… and then, obviously, his confidence tanked. I’d like him to develop more leadership skills as well. Trevor would get pist off and make you pay. I haven’t seen that from DJ except maybe 2 or 3 times.

Feb 3, 2022, 4:23 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: DJ Uiagalelei slimming down for more agility ]

I don’t post a whole lot, but I think you are correct in your assessment. DJ’s performance was way off due to off-field issue than anything else. Yeah, issues like, W/R, OL and RB pass protection, his injuries and his weight were big factors; but for a 19-20 year old, his parents’ deteriorating relationship was bigger. He fought through a lot of issues, and held it together. IMHO, I think we are going to see a DJ playing more instinctively with more confidence.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Not exaggerating. He needs to lose about 60-70 lbs

Feb 2, 2022, 11:07 PM

The article said he has already lost 10 lbs after the coaches challenged him to lose some weight so he’s off to a good start. At his age it’s easy to lose weight but pleasing all the fans will be harder.

I think playing some no huddle 7 on 7 over the summer might help his decisions &help him work through his reads.

If the game would slow down for him mentally he has tremendous talent to run, pass or audible under the gun.

If he & his WR’s would work together on the same page we could be the best team in the country.

Re: Not exaggerating. He needs to lose about 60-70 lbs

Feb 3, 2022, 11:57 AM

I whole heartedly don't agree with 60-70 lbs bc, a college level D-1 QB should weigh anywhere close 215-230 lbs depending on height, and bone structure as in being big boned or not. This is a guess, but I'm guessing that DJ weighed last playing season around 260-270 pounds. At 270, he should lose at least 40 lbs, and at 260, probably 30 lbs bc he is 6'5", and he is a big boned kid!!!!!

Re: TNET: DJ Uiagalelei slimming down for more agility

Feb 3, 2022, 12:12 AM

About 20 lbs would be ideal I'm thinking, getting down to around 235 or so. That still gives him enough bulk to push the pile if need be, but allow him to be a step quicker. That was the problem imo, his quickness and first step were slothful. We shall see; genetics are not exactly his ally.
Now, as for the staring receivers down, that's on Streeter and Tajh to work on.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: DJ Uiagalelei slimming down for more agility

Feb 3, 2022, 9:30 AM

That's what i was thinking 230-235 would be ideal with his frame. He was never really a runner anyway. But this offense needs him to be mobile. I don't need him running 20 times a game. Just be able to move in the pocket.. use his legs if things break down. That would help the offense out tremendously. Just the threat of him pulling it down and getting some yards on a broken play would have been money last season.

Just for the reading-impaired:

No one is claiming that losing weight will solve all of DJ's problems. No fans...no coaches...not DJ.

In this article alone, Streeter is quoted as talking about the hard lessons DJ learned this season and getting healthy overall. He also mentioned that weight loss...something nearly universally agreed to be an opportunity to improve...was in process for DJ.

Re: PSA: NO ONE said that all DJ has to do is lose weight.

It is not how skinny he can get; it is putting in more muscle with less fat. At his age, 10 pounds is a good loss. He just needs to redevelop his physique.

That's fine. More knowledgeable people than me will

Re: PSA: NO ONE said that all DJ has to do is lose weight.

Feb 3, 2022, 1:39 PM [ in reply to Re: PSA: NO ONE said that all DJ has to do is lose weight. ]

I agree that he should get down to the size that TL16 was, or maybe 5 pounds heavier bc they are the same height I think, and I thought that TL16 probably needed to add another 5-10 pounds of muscle weight to better protect him from huge LB's, and D-lineman that tries to destroy a QB. But what ever weight he gets down to, he should do more sprints to get himself as quick as possible for short distances for buying himself a little extra time to get rid of the ball to avoid sacks, or to keep himself from having to dodge big hits bc, when he is doing that, he isn't picking up on open receivers anywhere on the field, he is to busy trying to not get blasted.

According to DJ's stats for 2021 season, he took way many sacks, and the majority of those sacks were bc of DJ's inability to process what was really happening around him, and not reacting quick enough to avoid those sacks with him trying to make something happen after his time for holding the ball had ran out. IMHO, DJ was his own worst enemy resulting from being over weight, that resulting in him not being able to move around quick enough, that resulted in him being pressured to many times to often causing him to make bad decisions.

IMO, All of the above was DJ Uiagalelei's complete 2021 FB season mainly bc he was way over weight to play the offensive system that Clemson has been playing since Dabo hired The Chad to come in and install as the offensive system that he wanted to run as the HC of Clemson FB. After The Chad left, Dabo and Tony adjusted that system to fit more of what Tony wanted to do with it, and it will go through more adjustments bc of the offensive mind set of Streeter, and what he and Dabo can agree on, but we can always be sure that what ever changes the offense goes through, it will always be a Dabo Sweeny approved offense. The Dabo spread offense won't ever fit, or work well with an over weight QB that can't get out of his own way, and that is exactly what our offense suffered through the 2021 FB season, an over weight DJ Uiagalelei. But at the same time, with all of the struggles that DJ had running our offense last season, there is no way I could ever be convinced that Dabo didn't know the exact reason for DJ's struggles, and it leaves me wondering why this had to wait until the off season before anything was done to correct DJ being over weight!!!!

Lets hope so bc, I believe that Cade will have to be a bunch better before Dabo will sit DJ. T-Law was a once in a life time QB when he took the job from Kelly Bryant that took us to the playoffs the year before, and we had two back to back once in a life time QBs with DW4, and TL16. So I believe that Dabo will give DJ more than enough time to prove himself this coming season thinking that it couldn't happen near the same way for a 3d time with the QBs!!!

to remember where all his receivers are rather than focus all his attention on his primary. He might benefit on hitting a moving target and reading a DE during his attempts to option.

Agility is not learned, it is given of God and when God said get your agility DJ though he said inept ability and ran the other way.

I think a lot of people are forgetting the tremendous pressure of following two once in a lifetime QBs, DW4 and TL16. Add his parents divorce on top of that, he must’ve felt the weight of the world on his shoulders. Drop the home opener and it was downhill from there. I hope DJ focuses on the weight room and his mental health. Getting healthy should also help. The potential is there, we saw it when he played ND. We just need him to relax and have fun.
