Former Clemson player Ray Williams passed away last night. Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.
Williams was a starting wide receiver and kick returner for Clemson between 1983-86, he was one of the first Tigers in history to reach 1,000 career receiving yards and 1,000 career kickoff return yards. I know he has been dealing with some health issues.

Baseball game against the coots at the old Sarge Fry field, I was behind the fence in left field. Ray made two outstanding plays that night. One in the gap and another line drive over his head he had to run back on. Great defensive player. If I remember, he also stole a base that night. Outstanding representative of Clemson! Will be missed! Prayers to his family.

Very sad news indeed. Praying for the Williams family. Ray was the epitome of "A Clemson man needs no introduction!" He could tell some great stories about playing for Coach Ford and Coach Wilhelm. I will always remember the love in his voice whenever he mentioned Coach Ford.

Great player and great man. Beloved in the Easley area. Ray used to tell the story that once he was in the dugout and Coach Wilhelm said “Williams I don’t think much of you as a baseball player.” Immediately Ray shot back. “That’s ok I don’t think much of you as a coach.”

I remember being at Sarge Frye for an afternoon game (mid 80s perhaps). Ray came up to the plate and took a pitch WAYYYYYY beyond the left field fence for a HUGE HR. Absolutely destroyed that ball. As soon as it left the bat, you knew it was gone. Clemson crowd ERUPTED. Took a close game and turned it into a blowout. Clemson poured it on the dirt peckers that afternoon. Almost felt bad for ol Junebug Raines.
May God welcome Ray to his eternal home. Remember, Ray is in Paradise now; we will all see him again. I didn't know him, but enjoyed watching him play FB and BB as a youngster. Rest in Peace Tiger....

For the class we had to attend a few concerts and write reports on them. Ray/I went to see the Franz Liszt Orchestra in Budapest, Hungary in Tillman one weeknight. Needless to say, we were both bored out of our minds. We left at halftime - I mean intermission.
At the Scar game in Columbia in '85, I was in the band. Near halftime, I was behind the north endzone as that was where my spot was to enter the field. We scored in that endzone just before halftime. We went for 2 and got it on a pass to Flagler. Ray was running a route to the other side and after the conversion, he kept right on running, recognized me and give me a high five without breaking stride.
I've run into him a couple times over the years. He was a good man.
Rest in peace, Ray! Prayers of comfort for the family
