Random thoughts this morning...

Dec 1, 2013, 12:04 PM

That loss hurts. Bad.

Especially with how it all played out with the turnovers. Even Spurrier said himself that they were fortunate to make a couple plays early and a couple late and nothing in between. He was absolutely right. Clemson gift wrapped this one for his team. We were stoning them at the line, and we were gashing their defense for 15-20 yard runs regularly. In the end it came down to turnovers. And I can't stress how much that first one set the tone for the game.

With all of that said, while selfishly I wish these seniors had won the game for me, the more I think about it, I really wish they had won the game for themselves. I know how much it meant to them, and now they have to live with never beating South Carolina for the rest of their lives. I really appreciate what they gave to this program. Regardless of the outcome of last night's game, they contributed to a lot of good over the past several seasons, and for that I am thankful. And, not to be overlooked, they are fine young men, and I am proud of how they represent Clemson.

Like many of you, I am frustrated with this streak. It's hard to stomach, and I hate it. With that being said, I think some of the comments on here about how this is another wasted season are also equally hard to stomach. Lots of it is from South Carolina fans, and I know lots of it is due to emotions running high after the loss, too. This was not a wasted season. Last season was not a wasted season. And neither was the one before that. Our coaches and players have put together a solid body of work over those seasons.

Allow me to ramble for a moment:

1. Comments about how we miss Tommy Bowden.

Absurd. Yes, he beat a few mediocre South Carolina teams handily. However, he also regularly lost to Wake Forest, Duke, Maryland, etc. And I don't mean ranked WF, MD, Duke teams either.

2. Comments about how we never beat good teams.

Also absurd. We beat a fully loaded Georgia team that before a complete fluke play had Auburn beat. Yes, the same Auburn team that just beat Alabama. We also have a recent win over LSU that also has a win over Auburn. Yes, that same Auburn team that just beat Alabama.

3. Comments about how Dabo needs to be looking for a job.

This one might take the cake. Yeah, I am frustrated. Heck, I am mad as a hornet about losing 5 straight to South Carolina. But calling for Dabo's head after the success of the last 3 years is egregious. I'm not going to waste my time explaining why. If you need an explanation, I feel sorry for you. What's amazing to me is how some folks think we can build stability by just having a rotating door of coaches.

4. It pains me to say this, but this ain't your daddy's South Carolina.

I can't stand the Gamecocks or Spurrier, but I think it's pretty narrow minded not to realize that their program is in the best shape in it's history. Losing to them absolutely stinks, but these aren't the teams that for decades were the laughing stock of the SEC. We used to dominate this rivalry because, frankly, they were horrible. Well, they are not horrible anymore. Hopefully we can get them in the Valley next season.

I am still very much ALL IN with Dabo. And I am ALL IN with the Clemson Tigers and this senior class. And yeah, I do hope we still get a BCS bid (unlike some on here that, frankly, need a lobotomy).

Go Tigers.

Zero turnovers and we win. Guaranteed.***

Just a fact. We played well enough to win minus

Dec 1, 2013, 12:32 PM

the turnovers. Heck, look at the stats. We beat them in most of the stats except the time of possession. The fact we had the stats we had is actually amazing. Take away the turnovers, even up the possession time, and we win.

IF ... you don't

Dec 1, 2013, 12:22 PM

attend the games, support the University and its athletic programs, promote Clemson as the great University that it is, remain loyal to this University at all times then you have NO right to bash any part of the University, its teams, coaches, players or administrators.

Clemson can and will survive without the WalMart fans. If you want to see this University continue to improve ....... dig deep$

This post was certainly NOT intended to you. There are many on this forum who enjoy speaking in a negative way about the Tigers. You are not one of them!

That as proud as I am of this senior class (Boyd, Watkins, B Thomas, D Robinson in particular), I am also very excited to see them go and see what this new wave of talent has to offer. I believe they are still somewhat of a left-over from Napier, Steele, Scott line--that softer brand of football. I am still a huge Boyd fan, but I am ready for the next QB to make a name for himself at Clemson. Hate it Tajh couldn't get the win last night.

The main senior I will truly miss is Spencer Shuey. Kid can flat out play, and has given us a dominant leader on defense that we haven't had at the backer position in a while. But we have plenty of people to fill his shoes, and more supplements on that side of the ball to step in.

Before the game, yesterday morning, my house was talking about how next year is our year. I know, I know...hate to sound very cootish but I believe this is very much the case. My take going forward...

Offense:

QB--Best trio in the country. This type of competition will force someone to step up.

RB--Heavier Zac Brooks, CJ Davidson, and the two freshmen will make for a great battle at this position

TE--Jordan Leggett's coming out year, plus McCullough and a better conditioned Seckinger

OL--Will be a young group. Led by Norton/Guillermo battle, and I hope Battle can finally turn it up

WR--We've had two consecutive years of arguably top receivers in the country. If Bryant stays could it be three? Peake, TJ Green, Hopper, Humphries, Williams will have a lot to prove

Defense:

DL--We return a bigger DL than this year with all of them coming back. Pagano and Okundeko (sp?) will be interesting to watch. But I love what we have coming back here even with the Beasely loss

LB--Anthony, Jones, Boulware, Steward...next level talent across the board

DB--We lose our weakest link, IMO, from this years squad in Darius Robinson. Spurrier picked on him all night last night, and he killed us. Replace him with Alexander and you have to like that trade...

Have to love where this program is positioned. Also, best news for Clemson fans--NO more Connor Shaw. Kid is a ball player that knows how to win football games. Glad to see him go. But I really like how we've looked (finally physical) as a team, and like our stance moving forward. Avoid turnovers this year and we're undefeated (haha, I know), something that can be fixed with some personnel tweaks.

Go Tigers

Ain't your daddy's USC?

Dec 1, 2013, 1:04 PM

Excuse me but the USC I saw last night was not that good and very beatable. What did they excel in? Rushing...no, controlling the line of scrimmage....no. They had a QB that had a nose for the first down marker and always the will to get there. We have alot more talent and when we didn't shoot ourselves in the foot, it showed.

This loss was not because USC is so much better than the teams Bowden faced. It was about our execution.

Shaw did not play last year!

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He played last night

Dec 1, 2013, 4:53 PM

And that's the game I was talking about. Last year's USC team wasn't that great either but they did still kill us on 3rd and long....just differently.

Dec 1, 2013, 2:50 PM

with their class and compassion for others than win with that slimeball and his skunks. Yep, I'm sick this morning, but I also feel Dabo is raising young men of character who we will be proud of for the rest of their lives and who will always be Tigers. Shot during a burglary....watering the bushes in G'ville??? Not for me ever!

That is ridiculous. How many players do you keep up with that are not in the NFL from 5 years ago. How many of their names without looking them up do you even remember?

I am sick of reading this lame drivel. We are trying to win football games not Miss Congeniality. Show me a good loser and I will show you a LOSER. I am sure Dabo would rather win than accept losers crowning him with sainthood.

Re: Random thoughts this morning...

Dec 1, 2013, 4:34 PM

nice comments but you really need to take off the rose colored glasses. Good comments re the players and Dabo from many respects but the fact is Dabo is too easy, his pregame prep is wanting, he needs to learn how to be the HC, and several more areas--all of which can be learned. He's very young.
However, the other 2 keys OC and DC are clueless! Horrible play selection, worse defensive sets, that Sammy pass was an epic mistake, they are way too young and inexperienced. You go and watch them blowout a bunch of weaklings but not me. They will never get to the top 10 consistently with these 2 clowns. They are miss-hires and should be fired Monday AM.
