Raking in the Fish

Spud and 2K have graced the board with their fishing exploits, including photos of their catch. Their catch was by the old fashioned way, rod and reel with artificial or natural bait, I don't know which. One day I caught a tub of fish by an entirely different method, ------- with a rake. My catch included big mouth bass, crappie and an assortment of other types.
Before coming to Clemson in 1955. I lived in Belle Glade, FL,located on the southern side of Lake Okeechobee. Huge drainage canals run from the lake to the coast. Locks maintain a constant water level in the canals, one of the canals running through the middle of Belle Glade. My office was located about one mile from my house. The highway was between the canal and my office. My home was on the other side of the canal with a street between my house and the canal.
Leaving my office one afternoon and driving beside the canal, the canal was lined with people actually "gathering" fish.. When I got home, I walked over to the canal and fish of every size and description were floating on the water. I had never seen so many fish in my life and wondered if some polutant had killed the fish. I asked some of the people if something had killed the fish and they told me the fish were only stunned. The oxygen level in the water had been disturbed and had caused the problem with the fish but the fish were edible.
I wasn't too keen on eating any of the fish but went back to the house, retrieved a yard rake and returned to the canal. There were a large number of people by the canal collecting the fish so I took the rake and raked in the better looking fish for them. Most of the bass were about one to three pounds and the crappie about 1/2 to one pound.

The old timers around Black River used old hand crank telephones. They would strip the wires and throw the bare wires in the water and crank the telephone. This would shock the fish and they would float up and then be scooped with nets. If the game warden showed up, they would just throw the telephone overboard. No evidence.

LBB, you use to have wimmens and rum first and then salmon and flounder. That is what happens as we age. Things get reversed.

Fish, Steak, Wimmins(when Sandy ain't looking...), Makers or John Daniels, Clemzin, Hot Rods. who wooda thot retirement wood be so stressful?

It's cool you referenced Black River, that is where I'm from. Does the phone trick work on all fish? The story I heard was it shocked fish with skin, but not with scales.

Having lived in SC for three and a half decades I sometimes pronounce the name Crappie like it's spelled. I feel stupid because Bill Dance says it like the rest of us Tennesseans.
