Question for you structural engineers

Oct 4, 2022, 8:49 AM

I've been watching the SW Fla/Ft Myers area on the FlightRadar24 app since just before the hurricane hit and have been following the area, when I can, to just see what's going on there. This morning I see this plane circling over the Pine Island Bridge, which was washed out and is the only bridge on/off of the island. I assume it's something to do with planning the repairs and evaluating the damage, but just curious if any of you had experience or heard of how an airplane can assist with the engineering of a bridge - repair and rebuilding. It's really interesting to see these aircraft in these patterns like this. There have been others doing a grid pattern, which I assume to be mapping the damage and the area to get the best idea of where things are and how to proceed, but really curious about this guy circling around the bridge. Thanks!

I would think a helicopter would bd much more useful for that!

Could be scanning with Lidar

Although I'm not sure what the value in a circular pattern would be for this application.

I have no idea, he's still there - been at it since around

8:30am or earlier - that was the first time I checked. Definitely some type of imagery or scanning or something. Interesting to watch.

I think he's messing with you...

Not an engineer but they could be collecting LiDAR data. Kind of soon for that maybe though. Probably just taking hi res photos or something.

A drone would also seem to be a valuable asset to observe from above.

As a structural engineer, this was my first thought.

Also, 3D scans can be done from the ground... that may come later. We have had 3D scans done of the interior of buildings to get framing information when drawings were unavailable.

As a bridge engineer, I have no idea :) you're welcome for the insider knowledge.

As others stated, probably nothing more than taking pictures or laser imaging at this point. Helps to assess the damage and current conditions of the area.

Sadly may be looking for dead bodies. Terrible thought.***

I think the helos have been used for that

Oct 4, 2022, 9:47 AM

but he's been circling since around 8am and still at it, so something is going on - imagery, or some kind of radar or scanning. Interesting, to say the least.

Sadly most of the deaths so far were drowning and were found in homes or cars. There are still a lot of helos active around the area every day, though - Chinooks, Blackhawks, Jayhawks, Air Ambulances, and others. It's interesting to watch.

A plane is no help

We have to see the trees, not the forest. I have to visit the site myself, no amount of pictures that someone else takes will be enough. Two cracks might be the same size and look the same and one is a big deal and the other is not a big deal at all.

It’s president Biden. They haven’t landed yet cause they don’t want to wake him up.
