Question for the old timers...re: Last Big Thursday (1959)

Aug 30, 2019, 2:47 PM

Ok, so my dad has a ton of Clemson collectibles he got over the years. He has a copy of game program from the last Big Thursday game in 1959, with ticket stubs, etc. With it he also has a piece of (it appears) a goalpost. There's nothing on it to identify it. It is a 1-foot metal tube, painted white on the outside and unfinished steel inside. There are some names carved into it, including my father's. It appears to have been sawed on both ends, and on one end there's a piece where it looks to have been broken off the rest of the tube.

Anyway, according to dad a bunch of students (Not sure if Clemson or high school, or whatever) tore down the goalpost after the last Big Thursday game. They took it over to the Farmers market, and using a hacksaw cut it up.

Just trying to figure out if the goalpost was really torn down at the last Big Thursday game.

Good afternoon youngster! I have my dad’s memorabilia from the last Big Thursday game, too. Also, the Iptay letter regarding it, as well as, the Anderson newspaper’s article. Just last year I gave it all to a dear friend who played in the game, Harold Olson. He recovered a fumble late in the game to seal the victory. He was a two time All American at Clemson, two time All Pro in the NFL and was Clemson’ first first round draft pick in the NFL. I was the ring bearer at his wedding after he “stole” my beautiful, blonde babysitter. What wonderful memories...
