Question for recruiting gurus about Travis Etienne.
Jan 26, 2017, 4:57 AM
|
|
He is a 3 star on Rivals. The 26th rb in the nation. The 16th ranked player in the state.
He is a 4 star on 247. The 212th player in the nation. He is the 1th ranked RB. 8th player in state.
On Scout he is 186th player overall. 17th rb in the nation.
Yet he has 29 offers including..LSU, us, Bama, etc etc. He ran for close to 3,000 yards in a season.
Why isn't he ranked higher? Is he underrated?

Probably because he didn't attend a lot of the high level camps or maybe his high school isn't playing the best talent. His tape looks good though. Not saying he'll be anywhere near as good but on tape, the guy looks like Reggie Bush. He has great speed, cutting ability and instincts.

This may be a question for Tiger Woods, but....
I'm no recruiting "guru", but here is my take. He does indeed have a very impressive offer sheet, so there is something special there.
Given the fact that a situation developed with C. Richardson, Clemson has made a late push for him and has been very aggressive about it.
I'd like to think that it is a "he's a hidden gem" kinda thing vs a "desperately need more depth" scenario. But the late push has been interesting.
Kid has raw talent all across the board. Let Tony Elliott loose with him.
Go Tigers!!!

He is not a hidden gem or a desperate take. Kid is a bonafide baller and I've heard that many coaches believe he is an upgrade over CR. He is certainly faster and still has similar power.

Richardson may have been rated higher but to me personally this kids film is more impressive. He seems to have more speed and quickness.

Todd Gurley was a three star until recruiting websites saw him at the Shrine Bowl.
Etienne was Alabama's fall back if Najee Harris was going to flip to Michigan.
He's LSU's priority right now.
He is underrated. Clemson coaches like him better than DAndre Swift.

Tiger Woods you must be a member of Tiger illustrated because all your recruiting information is identical to the info my friend gives me from being a member of that site.

Everyone is a little stung by McKinney still so there's caution. I'll say VERY optimistic.

and as much as he has waffled between Clemson and Alabama, it wouldn't surprise me if he flipped again.
I don't expect that to happen but it wouldn't surprise me.

In the last 2 years he has over 6,000 yards rushing averaging over 10 yards a carry and over 80 rushing TDs. He has a laser timed 4.43 40yd dash. Looks amazing on film. Not sure how a recruiting "guru" can compare him to a RB from a different state, but it clearly is an in exact science with much subjectivity.

And Carter certainly has been a worthy player. Either the gurus were wrong or the coaching is excellent, I suspect it is both.

17th RB Nationally vs 53rd RB nationally. Not really a similar grade. Scout clearly was way off on Gallman. That 4.85 time for Gallman is a joke. He is MUCH faster than that.

My take on them is they preach what the subscribers want to hear. And the majority of subscribers are from the SEC.

Wayne was hurt in the ratings by playing both ways at linebacker and running back at Grayson. His stats at running back weren't the greatest and I don't believe many of the services were even aware of it. If you look at the rating someone posted earlier, they had him rated as an athlete, not running back!

There have been tons of guys underrated or overrated.

The difference with this guy is he is strictly a RB with great offers and amazing stats. Gallman was recruited by some as a LB and didn't have the same offers as this guy as a RB. I am just wondering why this guy isn't ranked higher with his great offers and amazing stats. I am not questioning whether he will be awesome at all. I was thinking that maybe he was under the radar for awhile or something.

Maybe you should question the "raters" rather than questioning the player. What we know is that he dominated at that level of competition. When a player steps up in level, you never know, but one thing is certain- 4.43 cannot be coached.

Because recruiting sites are clueless
Jan 26, 2017, 11:27 AM

Same rationale the applies to Kiper and McShay. If they really knew anything about evaluating talent they would be doing it for an NFL team or maybe at a university.
There are the freaks that anybody could tell is going to be a star. It's evaluating the rest that is so difficult and honestly where our staff excels. We just don't miss on too many players compared to other schools.

Does it matter where he is ranked? I'm assuming it makes you look cooler when talking to scar fans or others that we got a 4 star RB. The fact remains this kid blew up his last yr of school. Performed well at the LA opening camp. Staff liked him better Swift(both look pretty good). He had offers from A&M, UT, LSU, and would've had Bama if harris would've jumped ship on them. We lost Richardson and might have landed a player every bit as good or better depending on who you ask. Point is this kid is gonna be a good one down the road and maybe this yr if need be.
Feaster White Etienne
That's RB rotation teams don't wanna see with the other playmakers on the team.

Espn has him ranked higher in the top 300 at #114
#14 as RB with a 83 grade.
