Question about RB “stiff arm”?...

Tony Jones (RB) for Notre Dame just ran a 84 yd TD, but at about the 10 yd line he stiff armed a defender and grabbed his facemask as he was going in.
Is the Facemask penalty ever called on the RB in that situation?
If not, why and if so how would the penalty be enforced?

He can touch it but not wrap his fingers around it

I am pretty sure that is the correct interpretation. I have seen it called on the RB for doing just that. It is probably not quite fair as a defender that pushed on the face mask without wrapping his fingers around it is almost always called.

Thanks for the reply.
I’ve seen other RB’s grab facemasks on stiff arms besides this time and I’ve never seen a flag thrown on the RB.

Two rules changes needed for next year relevant to player safety: face mask should be called on offense the same as defense and the “pile push” should not be allowed.

face. that is a penalty, but it was not called. It was against one of our guys earlier this year.

In high school it is 15 yard personal foul from spot of the foul. Downed determined by result of play. If after the penalty it is not a first down, the down is replayed.

I have seen a ball carrier called for grabbing the facemask of a defender. It's usually missed though.
