Question #4 for Judge

Jan 17, 2022, 6:27 PM

Two trains start at the same time from Pune and Delhi and proceed towards each other at 80 kmph and 95 kmph respectively. When they meet, it is found that one train has travelled 180 km more than the other. What is the distance between Delhi and Pune?

Bet you’re wishing you hadn’t gone to Sarah Lawrence or whatever little lib arts school you attended now. Take that!

95-80=15(difference in speed) 180/15=12(difference in travel distance divided by difference in speed = time traveled)
12*(95+80)=2100(time multiplied by speed of train A plus speed of train B = distance traveled

Unknown. I expect better for Judge and Sentient Burner Account lure poasts

You left far to many variable unknown and require to many unwarranted assumptions to determine the distance between the two points. First, not specifying the difference between network distance and straight line distance would be important. An engineering would specify that distinction. A straight distance would make it a simple high school math question. A multi-path network distance is actually more interesting.

Next depending on network distance, you did not elaborate on the travel itinerary, stops (if any), variation of network choices, or if 80/95 is averaged speed, etc. Did either train both take most direct route? Afterall, not all locations have a direct route, especially with hub and spoke rail networks.

Some folks here went to both a liberal arts school (yeah, I swapped out my "math credit" for philosophy credits - let you work that out and they were more difficult than my ExStat work) and then also have a few degrees from Clemson too. And Clemson has a few Transportation-specific fields...
