I hear everyone talking about the offense and the qb’s and the wr’s.
You need to be paying attention to the o-line, because that is the position group that is going to make us or break us.
They are going to be asked to do some different things in the air raid. You are going to see some plays with crazy wide splits. And you are going to see some clever screens.
Their ability or lack thereof to execute is going to have the biggest impact on the offense this year.

Exactly right.
However, a few other things are going to also be important for regaining chunk play success and scoring a lot of points:
* WR blocking * WR route-running * WR separation * RB blocking * TE blocking * TE route-running
But success will first depend on whether the OLs can handle the scheme with the splits. Note my emphasis in the above list in blocking.

The QB and WR groups where the two lowest performing last year. The OL was the lowest performing at TCU last year yet they made playoffs. These two statements mean your argument is compelling but not supported by facts.

The difference between 9 wins and making the playoffs, barring a rash of injuries, will be the play of the OL.

They showed alot of improvement technique wise last year under Austin Thomas. I think a simplified system with a zone blocking scheme vs a gap assignment scheme will accelerate their advancement as well.

A successful air raid offensive line does not require 5 guys that weigh 350 lbs like UGA’s does.
You do need guys that are smart and that can move in space. I think that will suit our personnel well, but eager to see it applied.
Good to know they will be practicing against a top D-line. Iron sharpens iron!

on the level of play from the QB position.
Not to say OL isn't important, but a solid QB is the missing ingredient to a playoff recipe.

Stetson Bennett played at an elite level

And is a likely NFL pick somewhere.
If DJ would've performed like Stetson - amart, savvy, and accurate - then we would have made a playoff run.
Stetson played at an elite level. We have everything we need, but we need to show we can execute at a high level, like Stetson did.

Oline just has to be adequate....they've never been "great"

even in our national title winning years our Oline was adequate/decent, but not "elite".
the scheme that we will run doesn't require them to be elite to have success.
The playcalling and QB has been upgraded...........so we'll be better just by checking those two boxes alone..............our WR play/talent/speed/etc....will tell the tale on how far we actually go b/c quite frankly our WR room sucks compared to our "elite" years (2015-2019)

Exactly - we don’t have any 6-5 4.3 40 guys
Mar 22, 2023, 1:28 PM
|
|
That are going to go grab 90% of the 50/50 balls.
We just don’t - and no amount of coaching from now till September is going to change that.
We have a good qb and great RB’s
So we better have a good OL, or we aren’t going to the playoffs.

None of our great WR were 6'5 and ran a 4.3

Sammy was likely the only one we've had who ran that type time. Maybe Martaveous Bryant, but he couldn't stay on the field. Ray Ray had speed but was 5'10. Tee, Mike Williams, Nuk, Ross as a freshman just won the 50/50's, but none were a 4.3

Nice post. I thought the O line improved last year. If they take another step forward the new scheme will make everyone better. Stats are OK but the eye test tells the story. DJ would have 3-4 seconds at times and couldn't find a open receiver. IMO the problem was the scheme. The running game was pretty good considering the lack of a passing game.
