Pyrotechnics to Replace Balloon Launch?

Aug 10, 2012, 11:02 AM

Possibly...

Please don't shoot the messenger, but helium is in short supply and it's not going to get better - that's a fact. If it hasn't already happened, it's inevitable this tradition will become history.

Should we consult Lt. Dan?

Surely, he would be our resident expert on explosions and such.

Source? Who says we're running out of helium?

Aug 10, 2012, 11:21 AM

I think that's ####. Wouldn't mind some fireworks though after a win at a night game.

Why is the federal government involved in setting helium

Aug 10, 2012, 11:23 AM

prices in the first place? Why not let the market play out naturally.

And why is the US govt. increasing prices so dramaticlly anyways?

Helium is one of the most abundant gases there is.

Helium is regulated because it was used in both world wars, and as such was a war material.

Helium is *not* one of the most abundant gases on earth. You can't manufacture it directly; but it is a byproduct of natural gas extraction and purification. And if the gov't doesn't regulate it, companies could possibly just release it into the atmosphere.

The price is rising because supply is going to run out. It's simple economics.

Of course it's screwed up ... the US Gov't is involved!!!***
