TRDJita of middle school age reports back from day 1 at school that she has 3-4 kids among her classes that when roll is called asked to be called by a different name.
Not like "instead of tigermanac® I go by pawski". Not like "instead of Jennifer I go by Jenny".
More like "instead of Sally I go by Ralph". Shid like that.
TRDJita of the HS variety says that in at least one class they were asked on day 1 to state the pronoun they'd like to be called by.
Social media has fugging twisted our society into some real nonsense I tellya.
No pigs, Steve.

They should number the chairs - starting with #2, assign that number to a specific student, and roll call desk # by present or absent.

one of those folks that from the age of 5 or 6 we all knew what was up.
He didn't transition until adulthood, and continues to struggle with the ramifications on a daily basis. We've become closer since his dad died a few months ago, leaving my aunt on her own. Brian lives in Boston, and I'm nearby so I've been able to pitch in when he's not around.
The stories---both from childhood through adulthood have been eye opening for me, and frankly brutal to hear. Being shunned and basically treated as dead to everyone in his small middle-Georgia hometown has made going back & taking care of his mom a double-tragedy. I don't think that path was any easier, or any safer.
Sure, there are questions of timing and process----how to redefine yourself. But it's not like the identity itself is a choice. That's hard-wired.

They are 20x more likely to commit suicide if they change their names to fit their gender identity?
Or are you saying people with gender identity issues are 20x more likely to commit suicide than those without gender identity issues?

time it seems like this stuff is showing up more and more. I mean, if it's just a natural thing for the person.....so be it I guess. I'm more inclined to think it's becoming more of an attention seeking thing driven by social media. Not ALL of it, but at minimum SOME of it.
Just trying to be objective here, at least the way I see it. I don't have problems with people, but I will say a middle school aged girl with pink or green hair wanting to be called Joe or whatever is pretty fugging wack.

No regrets.
Except maybe having a daughter just like me. She's a pain in the ###.

puberty is hard enough without adding another layer

of complexity. Interweb/youtube/tv programs have really started to screw with kids identity. But hey that's ok, they're just kids... Why is it more acceptable? Know a family that about 4-5 years ago that had a 5 yr old boy that came to them and said he wanted to be a girl and want to cut it off. NExt school yr she's in a dress at school with a name change.

puberty is already really hard when you cannot even be yourself. Yeah, going by a different name isn't common, but if it helps those people find their identity, it can benefit them.
Look, I get that it is weird to most because we do not live the life those people live. We do not have the feelings we have. Most of us are secure with our sexuality and do not feel the need to explore outside those defined roles. But some people do and blaming it on TV and social media really makes light of the feelings that those individuals have.

there ARE folks that do struggle with real issues.
Maybe my head is in the sand on this topic. Seems to be WAY MORE prevalent today than it was let's say just 1, or even years ago. 5 years ago. 20+ years ago.
Perhaps it's chicken-or-egg.
Maybe the amount of folks in that bucket have been consistent over the years and the collective group are just now finding their voice. Plausible to me.
Maybe there is a subset of those that do struggle with real issues and those issues are couched around sexual identity because that subject "trends" more than it ever has. And the couching of those around sexual identity is a plea for attention when in reality the issues are different.
I dunno man. From my personal (and admittedly relatively limited) observation: HS 30ish years ago: Do not recall a single LBGTQ or whatever. Big city life post college 25ish years ago: LBGTQ certainly present. First experience with a kid in MS 8ish years ago: Maybe heard of one or two from a TRDJ offspring. 2nd experience with a kid in MS 5ish years ago: Maybe heard of one or 2 from a TRDJ offspring. 2 yrs ago: No change from 5-8 yrs ago. THIS WEEK: 2-4 kids FROM ONE CLASS for 2 of my kids. Not 2-4 in the school mind you. 2-4 IN ONE CLASS.
Full understanding that society is, to a degree, becoming more accepting and tolerant. I just wonder what role it constantly being in front of people, in particular adolescents, does or doesn't have on the whole situamawation.

that's a fact. Kids don't have to look for their dad's pron collection anymore, it's just one or two click or pic away now. no effort needed.

My guess is the when in this case is 50s or 60s. MAAAAAYBE 70s.

ATLOrange® is coming from, and sympathize with the people who truly grow up confused about their own gender. That's gotta be tough. It's always been around I guess, but was extremely rare. This sudden explosion the last couple years of everybody wanting to switch genders just doesn't smell right to me. Seems like it's just the latest iteration of "Hey, look at me... I'm really different and totally bizarre, and I'm about to blow my family's mind!!".
I'm Goth and gonna wear black makeup and combat boots. I'm gay, and my dad is gonna have a freaking heart attack. I'm gonna date a black guy and watch grandma stroke out while clutching her pearls.
Whatever, whatever. The list goes on. In other words, I'm just not buying it... in general.
