Problem with 60 or 70 MLB games is

Jun 23, 2020, 4:55 AM

its probably a perfect number of games for fan interest. 162 games is way too long, baseball shouldn't be played in October. I think fan wise, 70 games would make a 4 game series much more meaningful. And I'm that guy that loves watching the Braves all year, however playing the Marlins 20 times a year is a little mundane

The players would have to restructure all of their contracts and agree to make way less. All the baseball stats records would be meaningless too. It would be tough to get everyone to agree for the long haul. The value of each team would go down too. The season is too long I agree, but that would be complicated.

Opening day should be memorial weekend Saturday and the World Series should be Labor Day weekend.

He also said football shouldn’t start until the Saturday after Labor Day, college championship on the Saturday after New Years and the super bowl the Sunday after

Less is more, lower supply increases demand, something something protect the value etc etc as a a kid he was just rambling to me at this point

Less is definitely not more when it comes to TV contracts and gate revenue though. That’s why seasons won’t shrink.

If this current dispute erodes fan interest further the economics could force fundamental change. 162 games of 30% attendance has got to be a money looser for the gate revenue. 100 games seems about right and would be played when the fans aren’t distracted by competing sports. Maybe they get attendance back up to 60% across the league. The NBA may need to consider similar to get the season done before June.

From the comments I have heard from NBA players

Jun 23, 2020, 7:59 AM

they can take the next 10 years off - no Clemson players to watch there, so no interest here. If their biggest attraction is going to be Zion, I will never watch another game.

I agree that the MLB season is too long

Jun 23, 2020, 9:18 AM

but i have a really hard time seeing it changing anytime soon. The bottom line is that more games = more money. You also lose one of the great things about baseball: stats are more comparable across history than in any other sport. MLB played 154 games from 1904-1960 (with the exception of the 1919 season) and has played 162 games for the last 60 years. The difference of 8 games is only 5% of a 162 game schedule so they've been playing nearly the same number of games for 115 years.

I agree that it is too long, but I wouldn’t want it cut that drastically.
Shaving 30 -40 games would result in the WS being played around Labor Day, which I think would be ideal.

60-70 games is too small of a sample size for a game with as much randomness as baseball. The most recent World Series champion was 27-33 60 games into the 2019 season. They were 32-38 70 games in. And that's a team that ended up winning 93 games in the regular season. Now that's an extreme example as that's one of the best turnarounds in the sport's modern history, but from a statistical approach major league baseball doesn't really start to normalize until around 100-110 games.

Also I'm sorry but baseball shouldn't be played in October? That's ridiculous. October is meant for baseball. IF the season is shortened it should be started later, not ended earlier.
