Pro day 40 times

Mar 10, 2016, 11:21 AM

Are 40 times at Clemson's pro-day still measured with a stop watch or are these laser measured times? Just curious of how viable these times will be to scouts if they are measured with a stop watch and human eye.

Brooks for example running a 4.44 his first time then running a 4.38 his second attempt. Will scouts see him as a 4.38 guy or say well that's stop watch error he's probably really more of a 4.44-4.45 guy. He's still fast but it could make a big difference to a team that might want him if he is running in the 4.3's but might feel you can find plenty of guys that can run in that 4.4-4.5 range.

Would it not make sense for Clemson to invest in the technology to run the 40 as a laser measured time. Especially with the number of players we have had every year trying out for the NFL and with all the players the we are going to have at pro-day for years to come.

I'd think

that the NFL teams have their own guys timing the guys. Don't know for sure though.

Pro Day times are legit. Clemson has been a stopwatch practicing 40 team in the past which gave unrealistic numbers, however, that has all changed.

When you see a Clemson player (or any other team for that matter these days) run something at a Pro Day it is legit.

In the past you hear the 4.2 stories and anyone with a rational mind knows only Chris Johnson and a few others ever came close to those times. I always thought they were urban legends and it came out at combine time or other professional timing events. Now it is all laser.

Like anything else, you get a break when your own people are doing it, much different when you take the bias out of the equation.

"Now it is all laser."

This isn't true

0.22 seconds to a handheld time. This has been used for over 20 years. For example, if a player runs a a hand held 4.36 time, then it would equate to a 4.58 Electronic time.

seems like a manual timekeeper would be just as slow

to start as to stop

The combine is Hand Start- electronic finish.

Didn't know that. I assumed when the player broke the plain past the line the timer started and when he broke the plain on the other end it stopped.

No, it's his first movement after being set

So when he hand kicks forward or his shoulders jump up, that's when the time starts.

Why is Brooks participating in pro day? I thought he was giving up football to begin his career in design?

Participating again? Thought he was on the motivational speaking circuit.
