Pretty wild that Cade Klubnik's first collegiate start will

Dec 28, 2022, 9:43 AM

be an Orange Bowl, the biggest stage of the year for the team versus the best competition, at least by ranking, that we will have faced all season. It's the only football game available Friday night to boot - so all eyes on this one. Prime time and then some.

That's some kind of pressure right there on this young man, and what a tale it would make were he to show out and lead us to victory.

Go Tigers! Go Cade!

No doubt! Wish Dabo would've started him against a bad team

Dec 28, 2022, 9:59 AM

like the SCar game would've been perfect to build him some confidence.

But hindsight is 50/50.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, hindsight is never wrong.

Dec 28, 2022, 1:53 PM

But I'm wondering, DJ had won the previous two games I dominating fashion and looked a lot more like he did earlier in the year. So why would Dabo have benched him to start the true freshman? That would have been toxic as heck for the team. And the way we started, did it look like it would anything other than another coot blowout?

As you alluded to, hindsight coaching is never wrong.

Re: Yeah, hindsight is never wrong.

Dec 28, 2022, 2:40 PM

All,

Agree on the hindsight, but I wonder about the team morale question. If the team was seeing Cade improve weekly in practice (which I suspect they were), wouldn't that have induced some morale- reducing questions about why he wasn't getting any playing time while DJ struggled. At the very least, the coaching staff could have given CK some playing time in the 4th quarters of Louisville and Miami - to see exactly

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We think he would have won that game.

Dec 28, 2022, 2:03 PM [ in reply to No doubt! Wish Dabo would've started him against a bad team ]

I believe absolutely that we would have tortured USCe had Cade started and remained in for the first half. IMO, we would have dropped 50 on them and taken them out of the game such that they could not have come back. Our defense would have done the rest, imo.

However, we can not know that for sure. Imo, Dabo made a mistake. I would be delighted if he confessed that he made a mistake and would have even more respect for him. But, unless he says he made a mistake we won't know for sure. That's just common sense.

Don't know if you saw my post on this...

Why in the wide world of sports would Dabo have even considered starting the true freshman over the incumbent who was frankly playing great in the two games leading into the chicken game?

Yeah, I'll lean to winning the game too, but honestly man, we started out great, we lead by 9 at halftime, and did you not feel 100% confident we were gonna find a way to win it after finally relinquishing the lead with 10 minutes left? I can tell you that the folks I was with were fully confident we were going to win that game with 10 minutes left, and at that point it wasn't time to chuck the true freshman in that fire. I just knew we were gonna win, all the way up to Antonio's fumble near midfield. Without AW's, do you think we find a way to get 20 yards and kick the game winner?

Again, hindsight coaching is easy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The thing is, 95% of Clemson fans wanted Cade to start

Dec 28, 2022, 2:57 PM

the SCar game (really every game since Ga Tech) regardless as about that % has been ready to move on from DJ since early 2021 (count me in this group). So from a hindsight standpoint, pretty much every swinging #### on T-Net can claim they were "right", "it was obvious", and "the coaches made bad decisions because they chose otherwise and are just too stubborn to admit it."

Coaches, however, have different sets of materials and insights they operate from, a host more folks and processes they have to account for, and don't have the luxury that fans do of having zero accountability for thoughts and decisions regarding the program, regardless of any outcomes they may lead to.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And too, I 100% guarantee Dabo would tell us,

He didn't make a "mistake"... unless of course we're guessing potential outcomes with the luxury of hindsight.

Have you ever heard a leader....

Dec 28, 2022, 2:43 PM [ in reply to We think he would have won that game. ]

"Confess they made a mistake"? Come on....that's how these guys make to the highest levels. It doesn't even cross their minds to do something like that. Do you think Trump or Saban or Musk or Biden or Smart or (insert name) would ever "confess to making a mistake"?

Just want to remind you -

Dec 28, 2022, 1:56 PM

The team loved DJ. They had his back too. Everyone was rooting for him. But at the end of the day, most games boil down to the QB playing well. The team seems to be firmly behind Cade at this point, but Cade is still going to have to go out there, kill the butterflies, and perform well.

Kind of makes you 2nd guess the decision to not practice him with the 1's....

He got all the practice he needed with the 1’s game time in Charlotte! I think he handled the situation pretty well!

Go Tigers! Good luck #2!

His experience with the second team paid off in ACCCCG.

Dec 28, 2022, 2:07 PM [ in reply to Re: Pretty wild that Cade Klubnik's first collegiate start will ]

It's also true that DJ needed as much practice as he could get. I'm not excusing Dabo not playing him but his work with the second team offense was probably the right way to go about it, imo.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Cade did play some with the 1st team.

Dec 28, 2022, 2:20 PM

He played in 5 games and was 11 for 22, for 98 yards, a TD and an INT. He was given the opportunity to win the job at Notre Dame, and he made a terrible true freshman mistake.

Cade did play with the 1's.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Do we even have a standard set of 1st team WR's?

Dec 28, 2022, 2:22 PM [ in reply to His experience with the second team paid off in ACCCCG. ]

Seems like it's been a pretty fluid mix there all season for some to keep falling back on that as some kind of preparation slight.

Spot the fargin ball!***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He might start nervous but he will quickly settle in.

Dec 28, 2022, 1:57 PM

I'd have him run the ball on his first play then throw long, then run it again. The first time he moves the chains the butterflies will die.

DJ would think himself into a mess trying to adjust his mechanics; Cade will settle in and do what muscle memory dictates.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He won't run on the 1st play. He'll either

Dec 28, 2022, 2:24 PM

handoff to Shipley or throw in the flats, depending on the defense UT starts with.

I saw where Cade's parents can't get a flight from Texas and are driving 20 hours to make it to the game.

They supposedly rented a car at Austin airport...probably paid by Southwest Airlines and started the drive...I10 to I75 to Fla Turnpike to I95...bet they've had some rest by now! They are very supportive of a talented football playing son!
