Prep schools...

Feb 24, 2022, 11:22 AM

Now that we have the portal you don't hear or see much about the preps schools anymore. Do we still recruit them like in the past? We got some pretty good players like Lawson, Merling, Dodd and a few others from the prep schools. BTW...we have a local kid going to Fork Union and 2 of the assistants there are Sadat Chambers and Phillip Merling. Maybe they can start nudging kids towards CU.

Doubt we recruit it much for FB. Things may have changed, but historically colleges "place" an athlete in prep school because they have some sort of academic work to do so they can enroll the next year. Dabo usually recruits kids that make good grades.

That's a really good question. My guess is as our brand expanded it opened the door to more players. We no longer have to wait on a kid to attend prep school and add another year of recruiting the same player. We rarely redshirt non-linemen, and if we do they can now play in 4 games. So why not have an eligible kid from our expanded pool spend his first year in our program?

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

Oak Hill Academy isn’t far from my home and I go there on occasion. My grandson attended their camps and it is a real basketball school. Facilities are very lacking but they attract top talent every year. Steve Smith, the coach is a great one. Rivers was an Oak Hill guy. They have a couple of big time players on this years squad. One is headed to Kentucky and another to Pittsburg. I don’t know if Coach Brownell remains in contact with them but I bet he does.

I don’t know the exact numbers but coach Smith is retiring and his record is much more than a Thousand wins and less than a hundred loses. In fact I think that I was told he was nearing 2000 wins. Hard to believe

I looked it up. 1227 wins

I think Wooten was number one in prep ball

He was pretty good college coach too.
