We all read the posts about people's health, be it mental or physical or whatever. And we offer support and empathy. Me personally, I've been through 3 years of helI. Chronic pain in my lower back & groin area. Severe pain, like a kidney stone... as in I end up in the ER screaming and crying. Usually takes about 3 shots of morphine to calm it down. In between there's just a dull ache that never goes away. Have had a gazillion X-rays, MRIs, CAT scans & ultrasounds. I've seen every specialist... gastro, urology, spine & neuro, hip specialist, etc. And 2nd opinions on most. Nobody can find the root cause. Finally just ended up in Pain Management. Everybody gave up and said "we don't know".

Anyway, finally an MRI found prostate cancer. I had the robotic surgery to have it removed in Nov. I've had the Lupron injections to shrink it so they can better target it with radiation. I have 8 weeks of radiation in my future starting in a couple weeks. 5 days a week. But the side effects of Lupron have knocked me down. Hot flashes, cold sweats, no appetite, no energy, muscle loss in arms & legs, anxiety, insomnia. I'm sleeping on the couch downstairs because I don't trust myself to make it upstairs, too damm weak. But prostate cancer is probably the most treatable there is, with a great chance of total recovery. .

So what's the point. I get a call a few weeks ago from one of childhood friends. Known him since 1st grade. Before I can even start my little Pity Party, he informs me that his wife has Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer. Maybe 6 months to live.

edited: too much info, sorry

makes me feel a little better about mine. The body just breaks down slowly, man, for everyone, in some way. I wish you the best and lots of recovery. I have a friend of the family, age 34, a female, who has suffered through a lot of idiopathic pain. I even told her parents / caregivers that I'd pay for acupuncture for her, if it would help, but they did not take me up on it. The nerve problems to me are like trying to solve a water leak that is hiding somewhere in a home. Best to you.

If you've ever read my post, surely you may have seen one or two with me complaining about my lower back pain with 4 major back surgeries behind me, with none of them taking care of whatever is going on in there, but 200 mgs of morphine everyday with oxycodone can't touch the pain I have, and I've tried acupuncture without any help. I've let them attempt to kill the nerves in the area where most of my pain is coming from, but like everything else they've tried has been of no help for the excruciating pain that I fight, suffer through on a daily basis.

If I'm to be 100% honest, the only thing that helps with making the choice of going on everyday is the fact that I know there is people out there that is going through their daily life with worst problem than I have. It doesn't make my pain any easier to deal with, but it do help with my personal will to face this pain everyday somewhat easier knowing that there are people out there choosing to wake up every day that's worse off than I am, and I tell myself that if they can face another day, surely I can do the same. But I won't lie and say there hasn't been a time I have thought about ending this pain bc I have, and there was a couple of times that I thought about it for hours.

Another thing that I've learned going this pain, once the professionals can't find the reasons for it, they will give up with the quickness on people that's in the same boat as myself or worse by saying I've done all I can do. I don't what other people feel when they hear those words from the professional, but it makes me feel that they believe that I'm faking it to get more pain meds, and they couldn't be any further from the actual Truth bc I would be glad to give up the pain meds that just to feeling terrible. I'm a person that believes that there is a reason for everything that happens, and most of my prayers are they will find the reason for my suffering, and I would settle for ending just half of the pain I have to endure everyday of my life!!! Enough pain can cause the brain to lose most or all logical thinking....

Diagnosed with metastatic melanoma in Oct. 2010, metastasis lymph nodes in neck, 2 tumors lungs and 1 in adrenal gland left kidney. I was given 6-9mos in March 2012. After over 100 doses of 5 different chemo's and 3 different high dose radiation series, I have been in remission since June 2019.

My full advice, be as aggressive as possible and push your oncologists. Live your life and stay as active as you can but take a nap if you need it. Find some food you really like that is easy to grab and eat any time you feel inclined. My go to were the Pnutbutter and jelly Uncrustables, cucumbers, celery and brownies plus keep some of those Protein drinks like Ensure in the fridge.

My tastes were all over the place but heavy stuff never sat well and still can't eat heavy meals several yrs later.

Keep your faith and stay positive!

I appreciate your post
But I do not agree with that approach

Someone always has it worse is fine for a perspective, but it shouldn’t be used to dismiss our own trials and hardships, the feels we have about our own issues

One of my best friends from childhood was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and he told me a similar story. He said every time he goes to the oncologist, he sees a room full of patients who are in a lot worse shape than he is. Keep fighting, Tiger. You are not alone!

"When I was young, I was sure of many things; now there are only two things of which I am sure: one is, that I am a miserable sinner; and the other, that Christ is an all-sufficient Saviour. He is well-taught who learns these two lessons." -John Newton

OK, last post on this topic, didn't mean to get so detailed.

But someone else may benefit, who knows. Once I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, I kept asking all the DRs... is it possible this has been causing my pain the last couple years? Maybe pressing on a nerve somewhere down there? I mean, it's in the same general area. The DRs all said - Well, it's possible, but not likely. But since they took out my prostate in Nov, I've had zero pain. So I have that going for me, which is nice.

I was thinking about this last night, and I remember my Mom had a slightly different version of that quote. She'd say - Son, you never know what other people are going through. So true.

no need to look any further than a walmart or similar store parking lot.whenever i drop the missus off for shopping,i usually sit, wait, and people watch.after about 20 minutes of this, whatever issue(s)that may be holding my attention pale in comparison to some of the others coming and going.then i feel guilty and tell myself to stop belly-aching.there are a lot of people around who would gladly trade their problems for mine.anyway, will keep you in my prayers for a speedy recovery and a successful outcome.

Pancreatic cancer...oh, my!

2

Jun 3, 2023, 3:00 PM

Several years back, waved to my neighbor two doors down as we're both cutting our lawns. Next day, find out he went to the ER in excruciating pain...admitted. Pancreatic cancer...no symptoms (as seems to be the case) until the pain. By the end of the following week, he's home in hospice...and gone two days thereafter. Swift, sudden...stunning.

I love mornings...it's like a snippet of life reboot...and I try to treat each as the start of something new. Not sure when I came to appreciate them as much as I do, but each night, I look forward to the new day with anticipation.

So many thoughtful comments, insights and experiences in this thread. Well done...all of you!
