If you don't know it immediately and start typing, skip it. You'll likely not need to know it at all since you'll fill in the down answers.
In this case, I skipped the second one across, but got all the other across ones immediately. Then all the down answers only had one letter left and were easy. Never even looked at the second across word after the initial one second.
