Powl for the over-55 crowd: Which car is in your past?

Admit it.

AMC Gremlin ?

Ford Pinto ? (if you survived)

Chevy Vega ?

Mine was a '72 Vega with an aluminum block. All of my neighbors knew what time I came home because it sounded like a motorboat. One tank of gas and one quart of oil.

1971 candy-apple red VW Super Beatle. I absolutely loved that car, and we went through a lot together. I bought it on my 15th birthday for $1300.00 and ran 2 morning paper routes until we both went to Clemson in 1980.
So many memories and stories with that car...

I bought a new Beatle in 1963 working as a soda jerk. My payments were $48 a month. Few kids had a car back then. I quickly learned that girls would rather go out with "even me" than sit home on Saturday night.

I bought the same car from the showroom at Frank Myers in Anderson. It had the white stripe, hood scoop with full chrome and a white interior. I still think fondly about that car.

'63 Ford Galaxy 500 - 2 door coupe. My father bought it for me when I was in high school in '73. I called it "The Tank" because it was as heavy as one and handled like one. But that car would haul ###. It had a 390 Thunderbird High Perfomance engine with a Police Interceptor package in it. Holley 4 barrel, Hurst 4 speed in the floor. He bought it from someone that he worked with for $200 because it wouldn't stay in 3rd gear. That guy bought it new in '63 and still had the original window sticker which was listed at $2900. Never did get that fixed but found out later it was a synchronizer which was relatively cheap. I was on Perimeter Rd on the back side of Donaldson Center where the long straight is and got it up to 130MPH before getting scared and backing off of it. The engine was still revving and wasn't straining at all. It felt like the car was on a cushion of air compared to how it normally felt. You could actually sit in the engine compartment on the fender well to work on the engine if needed. I wish that I kept that car.

72 Trans Am. All the spoilers/fender flairs were in pieces. I got really good working with fiberglass my junior year of HS (87). She looked rough but after the paint job she was a sight. Not the best back seat for romantic endeavors. I know what you’re talking about with the high speed antics. Took her down on Cashua Ferry to the PeeDee river and opened that 455 H.O. up. That floating feeling is indeed unnerving, especially with 20-25 foot drop offs on either side. Miss having engine compartments like that too. Not to mention engines you can easily work on.

1981 Ford Fairmont. Four cylinder Pinto engine, 4-speed

[1]
Sep 8, 2021, 5:37 PM

manual transmission. Car listed for $7500 new. I had to bore out and completely overhaul the engine at 85000 miles when the car was 3.5 years old. Tried to trade it in a couple months later, with the essentially brand new engine, and the car still looked like new, paint wise and interior wise.

The same Ford dealer I bought it from in North Charleston told me the book value was ~$1500, BUTT, with deductions for high mileage, four cylinder engine, and four speed manual transmission, "It ain't even worth $100." That was a saleman's direct quote.

Then he rubbed more salt in the wound by saying, "Next time around, don't let me, or anybody else sell you a car this size with a 4 cylinder engine and a manual transmission."

I guess he didn't realize there were going to be a gazillion Honda Accords and Toyota Camrys out there in the immediate future stealing that exact market away from their dumb ar$es. And, THOSE cars held their value just fine.

He did teach me a lesson, though it took one more time around for it to really take.

I will never, ever, own another Ford product if I have to buy it.

Buick Rendezvous (Thanks for NOTHING, Tiger Woods) that was one of the biggest POS vehicles I ever owned. Stuff was always breaking, and the sheet metal was so thin, I actually dented it one time by just leaning on the quarter panel while filling it with gas.

I took a helluva "underwater" loan hit, and got rid of it after only two years. Will probably never own another Buick SUV just because of that one experience.

For those who may not remember, the Buick Rendezvous was only "sheet metal different" from the Pontiac Aztec, which was Walter White's POS car in "Breaking Bad".

The best looking car I ever had was a 54 Vette. I got it in 1966 in mint condition.
It was identical to the first year Vettes that came out in '53.
All were 3 speed auto and had a 6 cylinder in line motor. They all had 3 one barrel in line carburetors that were impossible to keep in tune.
The side windows removed to the trunk, did not roll up and down. The AM radio was excellent for the day.

Top end was about a hundred. It could go from 0-60 in about half a day. No matter, it was the best looking car, girls loved being picked up in it.

Learned to drive on a '38 Chevy 2 door sedan original floor mounted 3 speed trans and a '48 Chevy ohv six. Began driving to school in the 9th grade, 1961-62 year along with friend who lived nearby. Drove the family 1949 Hudson Commodore powered by a flathead 6 and overdrive trans. Needless to say, had no dates that year. Friend drove a 1951 Studebaker. Another classmate was the envy of everyone driving a red 1954 Jaguar roadster. In the late '70s had a '74 baby blue Pinto wagon. Was rear ended while sitting at a light. The other car a Datsun sedan had a caved in grill and radiator. The Pinto didn't have a scratch. Year or so later, picked it up from a repair shop on Congaree Rd after a lite tune up. Turned onto the Roper Mtn bridge over I385 during rush hour and it caught fire and died. Thought it was a decent runabout car. Wouldn't have touched the sedan. Currently drive a 2017 red Camero RS which I got in part by trading an '08 red Mustang. Also have a red '93 S10 pickup with 5 speed manual, 2.8 Ltr V6 and 84+k miles.

Started driving in the family '65 Ford Country Squire station wagon with a 351. It was good up to 108. then had a '63 Rambler American until my brother wrecked it. then I had a '62 Chevy two with out a working heater. Then bought a '65 Mustang with 289. Put a new rear end in it. Ran great until transmission went out then I bought the true date car; '68 Ford Galaxy 500 with 302. Bench seats front and back and the smoothest riding car that I have ever owned. Started dating my wife and then I did not need that vehicle anymore. Family vehicles after that.

Surprised a turbo charged Corvair hasn't been claimed.

77' Monte Carlo. It had the 305 CID. Wouldn't get out of its own shadow. Heavy at 4000 pounds. And a 76 Vega. The aluminum blocks were infamous. Blew a head gasket and threw a rod. Wasn't worth rebuilding.

1972 Ford Grand Torino. 451. Four door. We could take four guys to Clemson on move in day with all our stuff in the trunk. Had an eight track as well.

Actually my Pinto was a good little car. The car I regret is the 84 Mustang that replaced it. They must have been drinking heavily in Dearborn the day that one came off the line.
