the Portal.
For whatever reasons he has, it is painfully obvious that Dabo just does NOT want to use the Portal. At all. He has given it a little lip service, but no real action. He seems to believe that once a kid enters the Portal, he is irrevocably damaged in some way.
I don't understand that part of his thinking. If a kid straight out of high school can be taught the Clemson Culture, then a slightly older, wiser kid should be that much more eager to absorb it, if give the chance following a bad experience elsewhere.
This whole country was built on second chances. I know not how any of us can change Dabo's thinking about the Portal. But, the facts are, by not availing ourselves of talent in that way, AT ALL, we are putting Clemson at a competitive disadvantage gap that is only going to widen the longer it goes on.
Now, this may be something that Dabo will never change. If so, then we as fans have to be willing to accept that the results of that may not be what we want to see going forward. It just is, what it is. And it is VERY frustrating.

The vast majority of the guys in the portal wouldn't help us a bit too. It's not like the portal is filled with great players up to Clemson standards. I hope we get that Dudley guy though. We really need another quality LB.

Players in the portal are certainly better than some of the walk-ons we waste scholarships on. We don't have a full 85 man roster at this point.

#1. We're not near as talented as some of you guys make us out to be. Yes, we have some talent in places, but we also have some TALENT GAPS. If Bama & Ohio State & every other Power5 program in the country can find talent to use in the portal then we can.......to heck with the "we're holier than thou" mentality".......if anybody deserves to carry that mindset it's Bama, and they don't b/c they use the portal.
#2 That's like me saying "the vast majority of 2 & 3 star guys wouldn't help us anyway, so why even recruit and sign them?"..........I would however say similar to the friends & family walk-on program Dabo has going on.
#3 We have a MASSIVE Roster numbers/management issue right now........beggers can't be choosers at this point. Dabo dropped the ball by not dipping in the portal 2-3 years ago when we started having the transfers out............THAT'S why we have the NUMBERS problem we have now. (combined with the fact that we still sign small classes)

It's easier for teams with garbage at every position like S.C. to get guys out the portal, because they know the competition to play right away is easier. Fact is, even if we get some players out of the portal right now, chances are at best they would just be a rotational guy or play in garbage time. We need depth at alot of positions now no doubt, but most of the guys in the portal aren't looking to be depth, they are looking to play now. We just need to start over recruiting and taking as much as possible. I know Dabo doesn't like that type, but the way college football has changed, he almost has no choice if we're going to keep up with everyone else in this chaos.

Culture has nothing to do with Dabo not using the Portal, the talent level of the players in the Portal does.
