Well, it's no A-10, but sure looks like they were there

Crazy images out of Ukraine this morning. They're destroying the Russian armor pretty handily, looks like.

Reports are that long convoy entering Uk has moved about

Mar 2, 2022, 8:27 AM

2 miles in 24 hours.

Reports are vehicles are simply out of gas and they don't have enough food.

Kind of makes the German's Battle of the Bulge that much more impressive. They were taking hundreds of miles per day. While on meth

From the pictures I've seen,

Mar 2, 2022, 8:32 AM

all the Ukrainians have to do is disable/destroy the first few vehicles in the convoy and then the rest are sitting ducks. The Russians are lucky the Ukrainians don't have something like an A-10 or an Apache, but it looks like they're doing pretty well with what they have.

Other reports are saying that Russian soldiers are abandoning their vehicles - tanks, rocket launchers, air defense systems, APCs, etc - and just walking away. Sometimes they're flattening tires and/or puncturing gas tanks. They have no food and no fuel.

This is probably one of the most poorly planned military operations in modern history.

I buy into the idea that Putin seriously believed the majority of Ukraine would greet the Russian military as liberators. He probably thought all they had to do was bring in enough military to scare off "the small percentage" of soldiers loyal to "the evil Ukrainian leaders" and the whole thing would be over. Why bother to come up with a complex military plan if that's the case?

I'll also say it's obvious Putin is willing to cause a lot of damage in Ukraine to win. However, the whole point was to bring Ukraine back as part of Russia so he'd rather do so without completely destroying the entire country. I think that's the only real thing stopping him from a full fledged air attack to flatten Ukraine.

I don't buy that it's a supply issue.

Mar 2, 2022, 9:55 AM [ in reply to Reports are that long convoy entering Uk has moved about ]

Russia has been massing on the border for months, and if you can get that many vehicles into a convoy then you can supply them with gas and food. It seems more plausible that this is the Russian troops lack of motivation to continue.

urban warfare. Russia basically has no choice but to go down existing roads where their speed and mobility is significantly limited and there are plenty of options for them to be picked off from the roadside, adjoining buildings, or from the air. And it looks like that's what Ukraine is doing. Pick off the ones in the front, disabling or destroying them, and then the rest are vulnerable and easy picking.

you what you can do. You could tell your engineers to get out front and build your army some darn fine roads. And hurry it up. Well, that's all good til they all come back deaded from trying to build roads to support your 10 ton tanks while dodging automatic weapon fire and mortars.

So like all militaries from the beginning of time, they use existing thoroughfares.

Now, this afternoon I will be giving a lecture on pontoon bridges. That's where it's at.

I'm sure Putin has some General he will blame for this and send away never to be heard from again. I also bet the US has satellites that have intel and are counting all the dead Russians.

Putin will finally just shell the large cities to rubble. Then what of value is he really going to have.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Quite frankly the Russian military has shown themselves to

Mar 2, 2022, 10:26 AM

be amateurs at this invasion business.

The problem with putting 40 miles of vehicles on thin, third world like roads (yes - Ukrainian roads outside the big cities are not the greatest in the world) is that without proper planning of combat power, convoy order, supply routes/schedules, and security - that 40 miles of vehicles can become nothing but a 40 mile traffic jam. Apparently the Russians are gumming up their own logistics tail and with just a few key Ukrainian ambushes along the route can cause further headaches for the Russians.

Russia seems to adhere to the school "if we throw enough junk at them - inertia will eventually win". That strategy can work against some foes, but is very inefficient, costs many more lives on both sides, and ultimately may be too costly to the Russians for any hope of long term success.

Covertly, I really wish the US would fly a bunch of Predator and Reaper drones armed with hellfire missiles over those convoys at night and tear the Russians a new a-hole. All we have to do is "give these to the Ukraine" by stenciling a bunch of Ukrainian emblems on our drones and if the Russians actually managed to shoot one down - claim it was part of the arms the US is providing the Ukrainians just like the Javelins and Stingers.

Not to go too far down the rabbit hole, but if you remember "A Clear and Present Danger", a minor plot point was a guided munition that was designed to leave no trace of its existence after it exploded.

A key moment is when one of the bad guys digs deep into research files looking for a particular explosive pattern around one of his villas. When he finds a match, he realizes the significance and says to himself "The Americans are here."

That novel came out in 1989, 30+ years ago. Who knows what all we have in out arsenal?
