QB bootleg

Oct 16, 2021, 12:04 PM

It seems many times when DJ hands off up the middle and bootlegs to outside he has a mile he could run without anyone near. Has anyone else seen that or am I just second guessing

I have been wondering that myself. Bootleg plays are for old, slow QB's, so maybe that would be a good play for DJ. Once he gets up a head of steam he seems to be ok for running.

That's usually because the D can see the handoff to the RB.... why would they chase the QB if he doesn't have the ball?

Saying at the point of handoff he has open space and the running back is running towards a crowd. At that point he is in RPO mode, he only hands off predictably.

They can’t count on DJ to make the correct read, so they are calling the handoff. You can tell this because of the number of times the back has nowhere to go, yet gets the ball. The options are removed so that he doesn’t freeze up like when he’s in the pocket. He is a scared rabbit back there.
The whole group, including fans, needs a team of sports psychologists.
While the on field talent seems a bit weaker than some years, there’s no excuse in scoring 3 points in the 2nd half against an average defense.
We don’t adjust…our opponents do…

I don't understand running a RPO based offense

DJ can be taught much of the aspects of a boot-leg, but obviously the coaches are training him at the pace in which he can succeed with those other (more important) aspects.

Receiving the snap from under center ... this needs to be taught and practiced; DJ did that well. Bootlegs do not work unless you are taking a snap from under center.

Ball handling / deception with the handoff are also something that must be taught and mastered. NFL QB's ... at least in the previous generation of QBs when the non-athletic / slow foot-speed QB's were prevalant ... had learned how to have a card-sharks moves with the fakery on the handoff.

Hopefully DJ will get enough of the other basics of the position mastered so that the coaches can add the hand-off ball fakes and then the bootleg into his arsenal.
