Players Likeness Lawsuits / Full Cost Scholarships

Aug 15, 2013, 3:13 PM

Regardless of where people stand on this point...couldn't universities start funneling more of their royalties from items related to players (jersey's, video games, etc, etc) into the scholarship funds.

If they did that, the players would then be directly benefitting from their likeness via scholarships and a free education.

Anyone heard anything to this effect on the radio/ESPN, etc? Seems like a simple fix...

just let them make all their money from their likeness......

and then send them a bill for tuition

they'll soon realize how good they have it.

Haven't seen anything exactly like that but it could provide a creative way to give players a stipend. The only problem is Title IX and would the money be enough to support all student athletes. It would at least provide a way for smaller schools to pay the same stipend as the big boys.

The thought was they are suing because they say they aren't getting anything from their likeness (...tend to disagree but understand both sides). If the scholarships were being paid for by their likeness....problem solved. No more case.

I like this idea, but here's another one I've heard....

Give any athlete a small percentage of the money made off of the sale of merchandise bearing their name or likeness (jerseys, pictures, etc.). Maybe like 2% of retail sales. But here's the big thing, it's capped at $5,000 or $10,000 or whatever a reasonable cap is, and they don't get the money until they have exhausted their eligibility and GRADUATED!

Will QB's share their loot with the o-line? If not, their

"likeness" will probably be altered by an opposing d-line.
