New Story: Tigers suffer painful loss to Duke

Tigers suffer painful loss to Duke

Clemson had their chances against Duke Sunday afternoon, but too many turnovers and not enough scoring was the difference. The Tigers tied the score at 57-57 with under two minutes to play but No. 12 Duke hit shots down the stretch and the No. 11 Tigers didn’t as the Blue Devils escaped Littlejohn Coliseum with a 66-57 victory. Coach Brownell needs another comment besides really competitive. Season's on the line. How will the Tigers respond. Like last year and lose against teams they can and should beat. Or the opposite. Two heartbreaks in a row that woulda, coulda, shoulda. I'm a die hard fan no matter what, but sure root our Tigers on for a better outcome this year.

Seriously?

Feb 18, 2018, 4:57 PM

You don't think it is pretty impressive for us to be competitive with Duke when:

1. We are without two key starters.
2. We have far less talent than they do (they have more five star players on their bench this year than Brownell has had his entire career).
3. We have far less administrative support than Duke does.
4. We have far less fan support than Duke does.
5. We have worse facilities than Duke does.
6. We have far less referee support than Duke does.

Don't get me wrong, there are no moral victories, but to be upset with him or the team for losing today is ridiculous. Duke is Duke, and it's an amazing job by our coach and players that we were in this game with under 2 minutes left with a chance to win.

I agree with every word except for #5. I’ve been to a game at Cameron. Yes they have the history and all of that in their building, but that’s all they have. Facilities-wise, that arena isn’t remotely close to what we now have at Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Players & recruits don't care about the "arena" ...

Feb 18, 2018, 8:49 PM

... it's the everyday practice facilities and other things behind the scenes that count.

"Fans" care about the arena.

My message should not have caused an attitude like "seriously". Yeah, we could lose, at home. But our ACC record suggests we should win. My point is that a competitive game is not enough. We need to win the individual matchups where they count. We lost twice. Brownell says it was competitive. So what. We must win against FSU away and Duke at home. We did neither. We either are NCAA competitive or not. Every game counts Keller.

Re: Seriously?

What makes you think we're not "NCAA Competitive" after the last two games?

Are you expecting us to win the whole thing? If that's your measure of competitive then you're in for a long and probably fruitless life as a fan.

Getting an NCAA bid was the consensus minimum threshold for a successful season and we're going to get that.

Losing on the road to FSU and at home to Duke doesn't mean we won't be able to win some games once we get in the NCAA Tournament.

SO...... if we had played 18 minute halves we would have won?

There is mothing more uplifting right now than Clemson football; and, as usual, NOTHING more frustrating that CU basketball. Just when it looks like we are headed for a really good year, I mean really good, we get a senior starter knocked out for the season with an ACL injury, then get to play Duke with another starter having to sit out with a concussion. And now we get to go into the unfriendly confines of VA Tech and see which of their teams shows up. Just frustrating! As much as I hate to do so, I'll have to pull for UNC to beat Duke, then hope we can get back on track. But I agree, I'm tired to hearing Brownell say how proud he is of his team. I'd rather say how proud we are that he made a coaching adjustment, as FSU did, and managed to win a game.

Brownell just can’t adjust during game ; see it since he’s been the coach

No wonder we lost to Duke. If my calculations are right by the article we’ve played 76 games compared to Dukes 27 games. We’re just wore out. ??

Does Skara have blackmail photos of Brownell?

Feb 18, 2018, 9:18 PM

I'm trying to figure out why Simms and Donnal don't get more minutes.

you do realize that there is such a thing as defense in basketball and skara is very good at that

1) donte is injured, if you didn't notice
2) mitchell didn't play, if you didn't notice. that meant 'quise had to move to PG and Devoe to 2
3) 1 and 2 greatly increased the need for minutes out of skara
4) BB has said many times that skara is our best defender. and if you actually watched today, you saw that.
5) please tell me who you would have played more.... spencer? don't say Donnel- again, if you watched the game, you saw playing Eli and donnel together doesn't work very well. simms doesn't give us a 3rd ball handler like skara does

no one is saying skara is jerry west. but he's a pretty good "piece". unfortunately, circumstances today demanded he play more than anyone, including BB, would have liked. maybe you should try supporting this team instead of sniping at the players.

He basically shut down Grayson Allen once he started guarding him yesterday. That was huge for us.

Disappointing to have all the turnovers on lazy passes and inbounds plays. Missed Sheldon Mitchell today, but the other guys need to take care of the basketball.
