Funny story ... my Mom used to use that phrase when I was much younger ... and I had no clue what it meant until I got older. When I did find out what it meant, I was mortified that my Mom used that phrase. :D Still can't believe she used that phrase.

The phrase "shooting your wad" is often misunderstood...

Sep 27, 2018, 5:45 PM

A lot of people think it's some reference to sexual performance.

In reality the meaning is fairly benign.

It's a Civil War reference to a "wad" or a plug of cloth to retain the powder when loading and shooting a muzzle loaded rifle (shoot your wad).

Over time, however, the use of wadding to fire a rifle became a historical relic, and the phrase took on a more colorful connotation.

It's similar to the phrase "it's cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey". Cannonballs used to be stored aboard ships on a brass frame called a "monkey". In very cold weather the brass would contract and the cannonballs would fall off hence during very cold weather it is "cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey".

You are correct and thanks for the historical tidbit. I love reading the derivation of colloquial and archaic expressions. A little edjumacation won't hurt tnet.

I think Dabo was getting a participation trophy in Alabama and was all giddy about that and him and the team lost focus.

What worries me is this is the 2nd straight year where something happened to Bryant the week before the Syracuse game that impacted his play against them.

Yes, KB shouldn’t have started last year in my opinion and he won’t start this year either. Several backup quarterbacks should have played last year in that game and seen what they could do. Maybe they didn’t want any controversy this year, but all of them transferred anyway. Go Tigers!

Re: I think the problem last season vs Syracuse was we didn’t...

Sep 27, 2018, 6:20 PM

The problem @Syracuse last fall was we did not have an experienced backup QB. Cooper was thrown to the wolves when KB went down. For that reason and others, Dabo has to get Chase some experience this and every week. Experience in real game situations is the best teacher . Not the film room nor practice but game playing time.
Chase was a very good HS QB; now he needs to step it up to the Div. 1 level and be ready.
