Perfect Bowl Scenario for the ACC

May 8, 2013, 1:42 PM

With the new contracts starting in 2014 what is your idea of the perfect bowl line up. Don't get carried away like switching every current bowl for a better one but what would you like to see the ACC do. I am still not sure why the chick-fil-a won't host a second bowl game now that they are in the playoff but also assume that no new bowls are added.

My lineup:

#1 Orange bowl - ACC did a good job working out this contract. We will get quality opponents and when you average in years we play ND about 30 million per year.

#2 Gator bowl - ACC vs SEC, Big 10 might be looking to get one game out of Florida. This becomes a replacement for ATL game.

#3 Rotating game taking spot of opponent in Orange bowl. 6 years Cap One (SEC/Big 10). 6 years Heart of Dallas bowl switching with Big 10 or Big 12.

#4 Russel Athletic - Cap One Jr. goes out and gets big time opponent in big 12.

#5 Belk Bowl - ACC vs SEC, bowl payout will increase as they try to take over the chick-fil-a bowl spot.

#6 Sun Bowl - ACC vs Pac-12 always good to have bowl games in Texas.

#7 Pin Stripe - ACC vs Big 12 good location for Pitt, ND, Cuse, BC. Gives us some viewership in the northern states.

#8 Music City - ACC vs SEC another good matchup with the SEC in a decent vacation destination.

#9 Meineke Car Care/Beef O Brady's Bowl - Strike a deal with the Big 12 to rotate this bowl every other year. Gives them access to Florida and us access to Texas.

#10 Military Bowl - Only bowl game with non big 5 conference. Washington isn't a bad trip and always fun to play Army/Navy.

Best bowl scenario

To me, to make the bowl games really work the major conferences should form an alliance and rotate the significant bowls between the SEC, ACC (with ND), Big 10, Big 12, and Pac 12. Use a pick rotation like the BCS did (and even have "traditional conference" tie in like the Rose, Sugar, Fiesta, and Orange did). I think the bowls would do a HECK of a lot better with actual butts in seats if you were getting multiple cities and opponents in multiple years. ACC almost never gets a Big 10 opponent. SEC and Pac 12 rarely play each other. This would really improve things all the way around IMHO. Using the old site names, you'd have the Cotton, Citrus, Outback, Pinstripe, Belk, Music City, Sun, Holiday, etc. on a rotation deal. On a year you get first selection, you bid your favorite 2 teams not in the playoff from any of the power conferences. The remaining bowls that usually take Conf USA, WAC, Mt. West, etc, would just do as they always have.
To me, it would be win/win for the TV folks and the conferences. The bowls can independently negotiate their TV rights with the leverage that on certain years they could host a UGA-Florida State or Michigan-Clemson or Oklahoma-Ohio State or Florida-Southern California matchup. These types of games are rarely being seen now.

I actually really like this idea. Maybe even let the bowls bid preseason for selection order. That way the games that are willing to offer the largest payouts will get the best match-ups. Sometimes bowls would get stuck with bad regional match-ups, when the conference they wanted was already selected but that already happens in the BCS.
