Offensive Line - My biggest pet peeve.

Actually, I have 2...

- The amount of Cross Training. For years (and especially this year) it seemed like a point of pride for Dabo when talking about all the cross training our O Lineman were doing. It seemed that all lineman were practicing in at least 2 spots, sometimes 3.

- Moving starters from last year into new positions this year. If I'm not mistaken, at least 2 starters from last year are in new positions this year.

I understand the point of cross training (have backups incase someone goes down) and moving people around (get your best 5 on the field).

However, my contention is that when you're moving people around so much, none of them are specializing in any 1 position and becoming great at it.

When I used to train employees, I wouldn't give them new task or assignments until they mastered what they were doing already. Then, I wouldn't add anything else until they proved they could handle the workload.

It was to no surprise that they stuck with 5 lineman this past week, and there were no subs. They starting five are going to need to grow up and start to Gel as a unit. They simply need more reps as a unit together and lots and lots of coaching (and time in the weight room).

But definitely a few critics (but nobody on message boards or radio). Oddly, biggest critics many times were the employees themselves. Which is a good thing, b/c you know they care.

What I learned was two fold through that experience.

1) As much as we can be critics, we are often our own worst critic so outside noise is just that, noise. As fans, we should keep in mind that our knowledge and experience is from a far and our expectations probably pail in comparison to those actually in the game.

2) As much as employees who are learning may think they are ready, they really are not. Many times, to their own detriment, they want to do more than what's given. This leads to bad habits and cutting corners.

No kidding. It seems like we monkeyed around for the right combination for the OL right up until gametime against Georgia. Even after 3 games, we hear Bockhorst still isn't comfortable at center. I think I would have rather seen him comfortable and successful at his old spot.

Bottom line is we have not recruited enough quality numbers. Quality OL depth has been an issue for a long, long time. Sometimes we can get away with it. Statistically, taking too many reaches/not enough numbers is going to occasionally backfire particularly if your skill isn't elite/matured enough. I like that we are choosy with our offers...and lately OL recruiting has improved...but I would re-evaluate the number of OL we are offering.
