Bullet trains. These things can top out at over 220 mph. If

Apr 2, 2021, 8:47 AM

Sleepy Joe actually could get a network of these things built, travel in between major cities in the US would be completely re-imagined.

For instance: Columbia, SC to New Orleans, Louisiana. 679 miles. Now, the train will not average 220 mph, let's go with a more reasonable 180 mph average. That gets us to The Big Easy in under 4 hours. So, you could leave Cooterville at 7 am, arrive in Nawleans before 11 am, spend the rest of your day there, hop a return at ~1 am, sleep on the way back, and be deposited back in Cooterville before 5 am the next day. Not saying anyone would want to do this, but think about the possibilities. That same trip now is a 5 day car excursion, two driving days in between, both ways. Or, about the same amount of time as spent on the train going through airport security, and flying in a noisy box.

There is a reason bullet trains have caught on in Europe. They are a safe, relatively hassle free method of moving from Point A to Point B in a big hurry, in MUCH more style than on an airplane.

Wondering if you actually think there would be enough traffic between NO and Cola to justify a billion dollar + investment?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I doubt there was a whole lot of justification when the

Apr 2, 2021, 9:00 AM

whole Interstate Highway system was first proposed, either. Trains had a pretty good monopoly on shipping long distances at that point in time. Auto travel was for sightseers.

Cooterville to anywhere was probably a bad analogy. But, Atlanta is obviously a major hub. So is the Dallas / Ft. Worth area of Texas. Charlotte, Chicago, Boston, New York. Establish those main hubs, and rental car agencies in those areas will bloom like flowers, even moreso than now.

Not saying it would ever become a primary means of travel, but if it were an option, I would surely consider it for vacation travel. Beats the heck out of taking three plus DAYS to drive from here to Texas. Or anywhere else.

Apr 2, 2021, 9:08 AM

Yep, I could see it being worth the investment with it connecting to all major cities. And if in a smaller city, just catch it in one of the major cities. That to me is better than jumping on an airbus, and if it crashes, your chance of survival is about 0 to 1%!!!!

Bullet trains will come to America one day, and probably not as far away as some may think!!!

Not 100% accurate.

While moving military and really, supplies was one of the justifications in making the "pitch" that it wasn't just wasteful government spending, the US military would still predominately would use the railways for this purpose - and almost would be a redundant newtork. Even now, our freight netwrk is short-sea and rail predominately. Afterall, the Interstate system was connecting major population centers, not military facilities. In addition, the Interstate took nearly 40 years to construct, often used existing multi-lane highways (For example the majority of the northern route of I95 was already constructed before Eisenhower, and had a heavy emphasis on both economic development and block-busting with a large number of required bridges makes it a very suspect "military" argument.

Really, while it sounds "nationalistic" and reasonable, the military value of the system is dubious at best.

Also, one last thing I forgot - The Environmental Impact Statement, that whole thing got applied to on the Interstate system with I66 and if a highway that connects into Washington DC/Arlington being the first to have an EIS, then you kinda have to question the military value

It would take a very dire situation to ever get me back on an airbus, but I would hope on a bullet train in a second. At least if it wrecks, I will stand a better chance of survival!!!

so there is that..

and unfortunately, we are incapable of building railways in this country without about 1000 people skimming off the project and it taking 2x as long and costing 6x as much.

Apr 2, 2021, 9:34 AM

I consider myself an environmentalist, but in the big picture, it is dumb to get in the way of a project like this. It does far more good over the long haul than any disruption of ecosystems in the short term. Nothing is ever perfect in this world, it is about weighing the good vs the bad.

I have ridden on trains in Korea, Europe and China. They are great going from large city to city when there is public transportation available at your destination. Unfortunately the USA is so spread out the bullet train would have limited routs where it would make sense. At this stage acquiring easements would also be overly cumbersome.

A non stop trip from Columbia to New Orleans would be VERY unlikely. In fact,a non stop trip in a train in the USA is unlikely. To many major cities in almost every state. Stops reduce those 200 mph trains to likely what a car might get average in such a trip.

The Golden Spike was driven on May 10,1869 and the rail system never progressed very much from that event. Sadly!

there is actually a design being floated where the train never has to stop, the cars for each stop detach while the train is moving.

Would love to see these and other public transportation in the future. In the US however it would probably only make sense in the Northeast and perhaps connecting large cities in California to alleviate some of the traffic snarl. I did a lot of traveling overseas 20 years ago and they were light years ahead of us in public transportation,... even now

I think it'll happen.

The only thing it was going to take was political will and it appears that now exists.

Too much money in 'em to not and I do think they're going to go up pretty quick once the decision is made to go.

Also, one thing I don't think people really realize yet is, farming is about to take a major urban shift. Farming is about to go to largely automated v-farms and I think traditional farms are going to be gone within ten years and certainly within twenty, which is going to pretty much wipe out rural areas...which in turn is going to drive even more people into the city. Which will only increase the need for city-to-city transportation.

So...yeah. Bring on the bullet trains. We're going to need 'em.

Who is going to ride it? Have you guys checked Amtrak prices recently? It cost 159 dollars just to goto DC from ####### NYC.

ONE WAY!

hell the Acela which is our mid speed train costs 229 one way. I can get to D.C. and back in my 21mpg Cayenne GTS for 70 bucks and to include tolls, 100 total. A more economical car? Can probably be done for 50 including tolls.

I spent 350 to travel from Paris to Basel, from Basel to Davos from Davos to Basel again, from Basel to Zermatt, from Zermatt to Basel and then Basel to Paris. The Paris trains were high speed, the others were mid speed rail. That is 6 trips for 350. Paris to Basel is 325 miles roughly. that is over 100 miles further than DC to NYC.

Best thing for them to do, is figure out how to get cost down, stop renting track from the commercial cargo train cartels and go from there. Will they? Lmao. NO! Amtrak is gov owned. The trains in Europe, half are privatized and the ones that aren't are seeing price hikes and popularity go down.

I'd love for this to work, but we have a Gov in place that just spent 1.9 trillion on a bunch of ######## and only certain people got a measly 1400 or if that and we expect a 2 trillion package to save us? lol I can't even comprehend this.

Don't be silly. That's a capitalistic way of looking at it, so that's obviously wrong.

Sleepy Joe says that infrastructure ends up not just paying for itself but making back more than was spent! What's surprising that that we don't have a $100 Trillion Infrastructure Bill (or more); we could just prosperity ourself out of the huge national debt. Win-Win!!!

About 20 years ago several of my family members were riding on a bus going south out of Paris. We were probably going about 70 MPH. A high-speed rail line ran parallel to the highway we were on. A high-speed train, also going south, made our 70 MPH on the bus seem like we were standing still.
