First Games are always a roll of the dice....

Sep 9, 2021, 8:16 AM

When you play a real opponent, first games are risky. The bad part is that Clemson lost. The good part is that you now have a lens into your weaknesses that weaker teams can't expose.

If you asked me (which I know none of you asked me), Clemson has a chance in every game they play because of the defense. Venables' D is very good, and will keep you in every game, including Alabama.

Offensively, Clemson needs more of a running game. Dixon is a good running back, and he needs more carries. Georgia showed what could happen if you guys go one-dimensional. I think Dabo will put a premium on getting back to being multi-dimensional.

Now a comment on Tech: Collins stinks. I have sensed this for a while. But I didn't have the heart to say that before this year. His only good trait is that he can recruit. So, when he's fired (probably after the 2022 season), he'll hand the next guy a better roster than he inherited.

While I just gave your post a thumbs -up I still some issues with your logic.
First off as good as Alabama is, as another person posted ALABAMA IS ALABAMA.As bad as we played on offense Saturday night we would have gotten beaten worse IMO, than Miami did.
And while I didn't ask you, how many other people posting on TigerNet say the same thing. We all are guilty of that.
Good post.

Yep - big games on opening day are a bad idea. I don't

think either team (CU or UGA) brought their "A" game. Let teams get a game under their belts before playing a tough game. TV + $$ will never allow that though..

Problem is Clemson doesn't have many chances to beat a team with an "A" game.

No doubt that our last 4 openers against Wake, GT, Furman and Kent State told us very little. We lost at Georgia in 2014 and beat Auburn at Auburn in 2016 and that set us on the road to the Natty.
Winning against a quality team in the opener sticks in the minds of the voters. We have no margin for error this year because the memory of a loss will stay on the same voter's minds. Only 1 week down so nothing is determined yet.

many fans realize. He was a terrible hire and he was kept around far far too long.

It will take 4-5 years to recover from that train wreck of a decision to hire Paul Johnson.
