Since we’re all sharing our summer vacation plans

Jun 7, 2022, 9:21 AM

I opted against Barcelona and southern Spain. For the wife’s first trip to Europe, she politely requested to see Paris. I couldn’t deny that France is probably the appropriate and quintessential first Europe trip.

We’re flying into Paris and spending two days, doing the sights and acclimating. I struggle spending more than 48 hours in big urban concrete jungles, so we’re getting out of Paris with a train to Lyon for two days, the second of which I’ve hired a guy to drive us around vineyards in the Beaujolais region just to the north of Lyon. Then another train to Annecy, in the base of the Alps on this beautiful crystal clear lake, for two days of beach, relaxing, wandering. Finally a train back to Paris for one afternoon and night then an early flight back home.

JohnFBell or anyone else recently been to Europe, what did you do for the COVID test to get back into the US? Hotel offer them, or did you find a drug store or something like that?

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You really shouldn't need a Covid test.

Jun 7, 2022, 9:23 AM

I would think all you have to do is tell them you're a doctor so you would be the first to know if you had Covid.

Embassy keeps a list of where you can go. They arranged to go to a clinic in Madrid. I am sure there are purpose-built places to go for such.

Lyon is A+

Re: Need 3 in Paris

Jun 7, 2022, 9:34 AM

Yeah I’m going to eschew Versailles and some other stuff you can do with an extra day there… I just don’t like big cities, especially when you don’t speak the language and stick out as a tourist.

Any suggestions for Lyon? I hear the Roman ruins on the hill across the river are spectacular, definitely going to see that. Any restaurants I should try to book?

Haven't been to Lyon, but if you like cool Roman stuff, you should check out Nimes (2 hour train ride from Lyon). It has the most well preserved colosseum in Europe.

Jun 7, 2022, 9:37 AM

It’s still a concrete jungle, just with parks. London is the same way, I just get claustrophobic in big cities. I’m more of a nature & smaller city kind of guy, and I also think that’s where you really learn the culture of a place.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Generally I'm like you, but Paris is an exception.

In Italy we had to have a negative test within 24 hours of leaving.

Jun 7, 2022, 9:42 AM

So we just asked our hotel in Rome where the nearest pharmacy was that did instant tests. No app needed. Cost about 55 Euros for us both. Then they give you the test result paper and just keep it in your passport for immigration w the EU.

United State’s immigration didn’t ask for it but EU did in Paris

summer term abroad in Germany and then a hospital internship there. So far, she's traveled to Belgium and Greece and Paris, I think she's trying to figure out the best place to check out in Italy now. She and two friends did a weekend in Greece last weekend and spent a grand total of 200 bucks between the three of them on airfare and accommodations.

Jun 7, 2022, 9:44 AM

Nice. Annecy is a really beautiful 12th century town. Your wife will love it.

The lake is quite nice too. Rent a kayak and paddle over to one of the castles, but watch out for the occasional speed boat.

If your wife doesn't drain your wallet in Paris, be vigilant. The shops at Charles de Gaulle Airport are dangerous to the wallet on your way out.

Safe travels!

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Also let us know how this trip is.

Jun 7, 2022, 9:45 AM

Wife and I are planning our next Europe trip and France is def involved but didn’t know if we should hit Germany as well for 2 days and maybe Switzerland. Kinda 2 nights in each. Paris, Berlin, Zurich. Or London then Paris then Berlin.

Re: Also let us know how this trip is.

Jun 7, 2022, 9:47 AM

I’m super pumped. A week without kids is exciting in and of itself, but I’m excited for my wife to see some of the world too. Need to try to learn some French though. Annecy is really close, like a 45 min drive, to Geneva. If I had another week I’d make it a loop and go through Geneva, maybe Bavaria, maybe Brussels or Amsterdam, then back to Paris.

Also don’t exchange too many dollars for Euros

Jun 7, 2022, 9:52 AM

Will only need them for cash only souvenirs and taxis. Prob about $500 worth is enough. Then just make sure you have a card that you checked and can use internationally. The exchange rate on the card is much better and pretty exact, vs exchanging at the airport and they take like 15% up front on the rate.

We’re just getting a little taste of Paris. We both do best when traveling if we’re on the move, more stimulation, etc. Only exception would be beach/tropical spots, I like to pick a spot and stay put.

Re: I think you missed joe's gist.

Jun 7, 2022, 11:23 AM

Ahhhh I see now.

Yes, well 10 days in Paris does sound lovely, but I felt like I’d get tired of the same balcony view directly at the Eiffel Tower after a few days, and there are just too many 5* hotels and prix fixe multi Michelin starred restaurants to enjoy in other parts of the country. And not to mention, my family is expecting shipments of French wine that you can only acquire from the proprietors, our supplies of cellared cote du rhones and burgundies is dwindling.

Re: Since we’re all sharing our summer vacation plans

Jun 7, 2022, 11:03 AM

I plan an extended vacation in a garage working on autobody panels. On special occasions I will be making trips to the adjoining paint booth and enjoy a luxurious bath of German paint and clearcoat. I'll return to the garage and reassemble the many freshly painted body panels and delight in the cutting and buffing before I top off my vacation with adding the many restored piece like the grille, lower door, fender and quarter panel cladding along with bumpers, exterior mirrors and highly polished aluminum trim.

But you guise no me, this vacation may be cut short if I die first or it may be extended extensively if I hit bumps in this long and winding road.
