Is it just me, or is Clemson's defense...

Oct 8, 2012, 10:11 AM

not really that bad? I mean, look at the scores from across the country these past several weeks. If you're holding opponents to around 30 points now, that seems to be about average (or even good!). Outside of maybe Bama, LSU, FLA, and SCAR, who else is there that can stop anybody these days (maybe Notre Dame, K-State, Rutgers)?

With the rules now skewed to favor offense, the advent of the spread, and the fact that most teams put their best players on offense, it has led to this perfect storm of points. I think this is just the new normal in college FB, and I, for one, am encouraged by not only our ability to score massive amounts of points on offense, but our ability to hold opponents to around 30 pts a game. Yes, I wish it were less, but I think we can score more than that on anybody in the country.

From what I've seen, Venables' scheme is starting to take effect, guys are learning and improving, and I think they continue to get better from here. I liked what he said after the GT game; he knows they're not there yet, but sees them improving. I trust him and I think way too many Clemson fans are way too negative, dwelling on the "good ol' days" before all of the widespread offensive explosion took College FB by storm. Better just accept that this is the way it's going to be for pretty much everyone on D now, not just Clemson. Not that we can't be one of the elite def in the nation.

In the next few years, with the 2013 class, and our RS guys from the 2012 class, we could be on our way to an elite D. What do you think?

It is coming around. it wont be a stifling smothering D most likely but it is getting better by the week. Keep working on real tackling though

Yes this week would be great for tackling dummies!!

The defense is statistically ranked in the bottom quarter of D1 teams. That fact kinda undermines your argument.

I have seen some improvement, but the D has a long way to go.

It's a work in progress that is showing signs of improvement

Oct 8, 2012, 10:16 AM

They're still giving-up way too many chunk plays tho.

I agree with the chunk plays; way too many of those given up. But I was kind of surprised to see that Clemson leads the ACC in red zone defense, and their national scoring defense isn't as bad as I thought either (yeah, it's not great, but not the bottom of the pack either) at 71.

There's definitely flashes of greatness. I don't think I have seen a big run up the middle in a few weeks now, it seems like everything between the tackles gets swallowed up by Watson, Jarrett, Williams, and Reader, the problem is when the bounce it outside we always give up big runs. The pass defense is improving, I think Garry Peters is the guy we want in there over Robinson, the defense is improving, we will never be accused of being dominant but all we have to do is get a few stops and let the offense do their thing.

is running down some aspect of a Clemson athletic team. It only makes them defend their negative statements with more vigor until they finally start accusing you of being unable to see reality.

I think it was actually 5 turnovers by GaTech against a MTSU team they obviously took lightly and didn't prepare well for--and GaTech's defense sucks period..........our game vs NCSt last season (a team the Tigers should have beaten) comes immediately to mind as a similar situation. We had a ton of turnovers MOST of which took place a few yards from an NCSt touchdown.

If our secondary would stop giving up big plays I'd agree

Oct 8, 2012, 10:48 AM

When you let GT score a TD by throwing the ball every down in a series then somebody needs their butts chewed out. I am seeing improvement at the DL and LB positions but the secondary is less about experience and more about talent or a lack there of. Meeks is terrible at angles and tackling, Hall is inconsistent, Brewer back there is a nightmare. Blanks needs more time at Safety since he'll be starting there next year. Peters and Breeland are holding down the CB position so I'm not as worried there and with Jenkins coming back next year we'll be solid there.

Safety is the position that I am most disappointed with.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We are not hitting their QB nearly enough....

Oct 8, 2012, 10:50 AM

that's all I know.

Fix that and all is well.... Sounds simple, but it is what it is.

Send more until you can send fewer.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Overall Better, but 2 VERY SORE spots!...

Oct 8, 2012, 10:54 AM

Need to get better pressure on the QB.

Need to perform better in the secondary.

It's just you. We're currently sandwiched between Florida Atlantic and Kansas in defensive rankings.

COLLEGE: A three-year starter at strong safety for Clemson, finished his career with 234 tackles and 11 interceptions.

Re: Is it just me, or is Clemson's defense...

Oct 8, 2012, 11:10 AM

I think there are three weak spots.

One in the secondary, one on the DL and one in the LB corps.

The only problem is, the "one" in each unit changes on every play.

Tig Willard, Josh Watson, Bashaud Breeland have been, by far, our most consistent.

It's hard to point to the problem...just too much inconsistent play. Much of it by seniors.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Way too much yardage and big plays given up

Oct 8, 2012, 11:11 AM

We have been fortunate to hold most opponents to relatively low point totals considering the offensive production, but that is bound to catch up to us like it did in the FSU game.
