Out of LSU, UGA and USC games, Clemson must win at least 1

Dec 23, 2012, 10:17 PM

for Dabo to return as HC in 2014 IMO. I guess it could be argued that a stellar ACC showing next year could compensate for going 0 and 3 against these SEC teams, but only if the ACC is improved, and I'll believe that when I see it. From my perspective, it's time to show it against quality competition, something we have not done much of under Dabo's leadership. Just imagine the mental state of the fan base should we go 0 and 3 with a 5th straight to USC, and this assertion suddenly doesn't seem so far fetched. I believe we're very capable of winning all 3 and it's time to play like it.

Unless we finish w/ a losing record next season, I don't see

Dec 23, 2012, 10:23 PM

any reason for the powers that be to let Dabo go.

I don't know exactly what goes on in anybody else's heads most of the time but I feel that if Dabo beats LSU then Georgia, we win the ACC next season after beating SCU, have at least a good showing in BCS bowl, n' 'Bama comes calling for at least an OC position, Dabo's gone especially if Saban goes back to the NFL. I could be wrong of course but I hope I'm not about the first 3 parts of the previous sentence.

Dabo would not leave for Bama, just like Danny didn't leave

when it was rumored twice that he was heading to Tuscalousa while he was at Clemson.

If Dabo is anything, he is loyal. He is here as long as Clemson wants him IMO.

he fits our program n' university to a t. He's the respectable type, a true gentleman, n' the fire within him is great for any time he gets media coverage that recruits n' people that aren't Clemson fans yet may notice.

I'm sure lots of Wisconsin folks felt that same way about Bielema, however. I really hope that Dabo feels at the center of his being that Clemson is where he's meant to be. I do, though it's hard not to think he may feel 'Bama is his home. Players love him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If we have that kind of success, why would dabo leave

You cracked your skull good if u even think bama would sniff at dabo considering his record vs teams with winning records.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

disagree -- Dabo is doing great given the league we are in

Dec 23, 2012, 10:31 PM

So, if you do bring another coach, do you think it is automatic for us to start winning against the SEC. How can we when we have to work so hard for recruiting while SEC teams can just wave the SEC flag? Don't you think that quality players are going to lesser institutions than Clemson simply because of the ACC. If you disagree, you remind me with the Gieco commercial where a couple of guys crawled out of a rock...

states' recruiting bases. sc (the state) doesn't have that many kids make d-1, compared to the above mentioned states, so yes, clemson has to work harder to get some kids, being a rural school will lose some more kids. but, clemson also has alot going for it. there are a handful of kids that proclaim "sec or nothing", but the majority will go to a school if they like it,it's coaches, it's location, facilities, etc.,irregardless of conf. affiliation.

Bama doesn't even know who Dabo is! No ACC coach is going to be head coach at a football powerhouse like bama. They messed up a few hires with Shula etc and won't make that mistake again. It takes more than winning at Clemson to catch a program like Bama attn..

Re: Nope; that was my point when I mentioned

There was much more uproar about Morris than there would ever be about about Dabs especially as long as Morris is on staff we have built in replacement that actually has coaching experience.

Re: Out of LSU, UGA and USC games, Clemson must win at least 1

Dec 24, 2012, 5:18 AM

I think Dabo will be back for 2014 regardless of how he fares against these three.
But to set the tone losing to LSU is the least harmful. It's a bowl game to finsh a season. But opening with UGA next eason is hugh because one of Dabo's goals is allways to win the "opener" and coming against a forma rival we play more times than LSU can either help or hurt recruiting.
But it is the USC game that is paramount for Dabo's return after 2014.
I said beating Carolina this season was a "need to win " game because it was being played in the Valley. Now having to go to Columbia in 2013 makes that game, imo,a "must win" game to keep us from losing a 5th straight and then having to win again in the Valley in 2014 to stop the bleeding at 6.
I think the fan base, and even the Admin. could forgive a 5th loss in a row in "Columbia" but not a 6th if it is in "THE VALLEY".

'.
Personally,I think that 6th loss would be the straw that broke the camel's back, even if we did win the ACC in 2013,or 2014.

fan base, I am quite certain that large numbers of the Clemson family are not amused over the losses to S.C. Never have been, aren't now nor ever will be. And you can believe that that lack of amusement has been expressed to the BOT, the administration and down on through the AD to Coach Swinney and his staff. While the defeat of S.C. is not necessarily an end-all, I have stated repeatedly that no coach at Clemson is going to be allowed to oversee a complete turn-around in the rivalry. That, of course, begs the question: how many consecutive losses will be tolerated?

to see if Dabo continues to lose after Steve retires. Many feel that Steve wants to break The Bear's record for SEC wins, which would be a monumental accomplishment. He is 38 behind The Bear. Estimate how long you think it would take Steve to get the record, add one year and that will tell you how many consecutive losses will have to happen for Dabo to be shown the door.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dec 24, 2012, 8:25 AM

to go undefeated in conference play, which we won't, it would take him 5 years to break the record. If we play at the same level we have played the past 2 years, which based on our current recruiting is very possible, it will take him 7 years to break the record. So, the answer is 12.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You think we are going to let Dabo run the streak to 11?

Dec 24, 2012, 10:09 AM

I don't think so. I'm going to be ticked off if he makes it 5 in a row losses to you cluckers and is allowed back for the 2014 season.

Dec 24, 2012, 10:47 AM [ in reply to I just did the math. We play 8 conference games. If we were ]

This is absurd. Also, it might should occur to coot fans that OBS probably realizes that he may never win the conference and this will be his decision factor as opposed to most wins without a conference championship. Is say this completely impartial but the last few years and next yr will probably make up his best chance to do that. And finally Saban could be then coach of either team and you would not see a run of success to extend more than 5 straight

Dec 24, 2012, 11:14 AM

None of us truly know what Spurrier is thinking. I do know that speculation that this record is on Spurrier's mind, has made it to print in the mainstream media such as the AJC in Atlanta. No one knows when his "best chance" may be, as he told QB recruit Connor Mitch after his commitment last summer, that he just extended Spurrier's coaching career "another 4 years" with his commitment. We have you at our place next year and you lose lots of talent off next year's team. So, who knows how long the streak will go? I know this: both Dean Smith and Bobby Knight coached just long enough to break the record for most wins by a college basketball coach, and then they coincidentally retired after getting the mark. I believe Steve Spurrier has The Bear's record for SEC wins on his radar. You know, Dean Smith and Bobby Knight both denied wanting to coach long enough to get their records. But, they both coincidentally did. If you guys are to fire Dabo, it would be after holding the record for longest losing streak (5 games ) for a clemson coach to Carolina. If he survives a 5th straight loss to Carolina next November (and that's coming), who is to say that the clemson Administration will not decide to wait for Spurrier's eventual retirement (though that's a gamble that Ray Tanner will not choose wisely)?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

All of that is predicated on maintaining your current level

Dec 24, 2012, 12:09 PM

Of success. You may be underestimating the rare value of lattimore and clowney when you make these claims. Also hope that the numerous coaching candidates who will think the university sells itself will be lining up to make tanners choice easier. A coach like OBS is rare in that he can assure himself of good supporting cast. You have every right to,be confident for the time, although with all the consecutive victories we have had over y'all, and trust me their was a much bigger discrepancy in terms of gimmes, I could never have matched yours

No more than you would be underestimating the rare value of Watkins, Bryant and Boyd. No one ever thought we'd get coaches the quality of McGuire, Dietzel, Holtz, Bobby Richardson or Steve Spurrier either. I remember just last spring someone on TNet saying they'd give up their left nut if we were able to hire a basketball coach of the stature of Frank Martin. But now we have SEC money and even a lot more SEC money when Mike Slive gets through. And the fact that Spurrier has shown that Carolina can win in football, that will make Tanners job easier. And a big difference between our time and your time is that we are able to offer someone the prestige of being a Head Football Coach in the SEC.
