Always thought recycling was a hoax, from a financial

Jul 12, 2018, 9:18 AM

standpoint. Always wondered how it was "profitable". But we all recycle now, and we're saving the world, etc. right? Well, it appears 70% of what we toss in our recycle bins has been shipped for decades to China to recycle, and China has just passed their own environmental law stopping their recycling because of the environmental damage it's causing. Who knew. I know in our house (of five), we fill an entire dumpster with trash and another full dumpster (every two weeks) with recyclable stuff. So 70% of 1/4 of our garbage ended up in China? Guess they finally got fed up taking all the world's trash.

It just depends on the market. For instance, recycled plastic is much more profitable when petroleum is high because that drives up the price of virgin material.

And the 3rd largest recycler of plastics is SC-based, so if you live in SC, a lot of your plastics probably stayed here.

A lot of countries take trash to be recycled. Problem for

Jul 12, 2018, 11:26 AM

China was they had a lot lower standard on what they took than many other countries, so a whole lot of it was useless for repurposing.

My understanding is that in response to China's move, most domestic recycle companies are going to get a lot more diligent with how they sort stuff. China allowed them to be lazy.

3d printing should have an impact on plastic recycling soon

Jul 12, 2018, 6:36 PM

once 3d printers hit mainstream (walmart) - local and DIY plastic recycling should really take off.
