SC Gubernatorial Candidates

Apr 19, 2018, 12:30 PM

I don't understand why some of these people NEED the stances they have. All of the "true" conservative commercials I have seen lately talk about protecting the border and being tough on illegal immigration. Why is this a platform for a non-border state?

The Governor of SC has no impact on whether the border will be protected or not, and not very many hands are used in the fields these days. Even then it's mainly African Americans and not Latinos who are suckering and cropping (if the farmer doesn't have the equipment to do it from the tractor).

Why do the people in SC need to know the platform of #### like this?

Why is it bad to be tough on illegal immigration?

Apr 19, 2018, 1:02 PM

We've played the "Oh it's not that big of a deal" game for what, 30 years now? I don't think it's asking too much for my property taxes to be spent on actual citizens kids education.

You're talking about a total of

Apr 19, 2018, 1:10 PM

(and I'm not entirely sure on this number) around >10% of the total student population in SC that is Latino. Less than that are not citizens but do have green cards. Less than that is "illegal"

It's not as big of an issue as politicians want you to think. We don't have classes full of illegal children.

Does that mean we need to ease up on them or something?

Apr 19, 2018, 1:16 PM

I guess I just don't subscribe to the idea that it's not something to worry about since it's only somewhere around 100k people in SC illegally.

I think our SCDOT is borderline criminal and that's probably a bigger issue, but that doesn't mean I want to pay for Jose's 4 kids to go to school either.

Not saying we need to ease up or ignore,

Apr 19, 2018, 1:27 PM

I'm saying there are MANY other issues specific to SC that need to be handled first. But you don't really hear about those issues (i.e. ethics)

Whale, whatever percentage you are going on

Apr 19, 2018, 5:30 PM [ in reply to You're talking about a total of ]

They make up probably half of the construction industry. I know hundreds come to SC annually to pick Peaches. I can name the farm, but won't. They clean my house, and almost everyone's house I know who has their houses cleaned. They make up a HUGE sector of the service industries. Harder the job, the more dangerous the job, the higher their percentage among the employees.

And black people HATE them, almost universally. Like racistly even. My son has two illegal alien children in his third grade class.

And they are a big deal because they displace jobs Americans used to do, and they undercut wage growth because they will work for less knowing their dollar goes father when they send it back to Mexico or wherever. And if you want to know how little money it takes to live in the US, they can live here on $10-$20 a day, literally. Send the other $100 they make back home.

And, they are averse to filing insurance claims when injured. They also are very skilled at working the system in the construction industry. They will take out a worker's comp ghost policy, then use that COI to bid on a huge project, like masonry work for a new high school. Then since they only paid $1K for their WC insurance with coverage for 1 employee, they present a very low bid and win the job with their COI. Then they hire 30 buddies to come lay bricks and hope no one gets hurt. If someone does, they leave the country. Then someone else comes back and they continue. So Joe's masonry, with 50 employees and paying $35K a year in WC premiums loses the job to Jose's masonry who bids half the price because they're only paying $1k in premuims versus $35K.

Upside to this is your high school gets built cheaper. Downside is less Americans are employed and less American companies are winning bids. The money in the construction industry LOVES illegal labor. But the average American, and especially black people who used to do unskilled labor jobs, come out on the short end.

And from a macro-economic perspective, illegal labor also keeps inflation in check, which the rich, and especially politicians love because that means they can lend more money, and our national debt is serviceable. Next to "free trade", illegal domestic labor is perhaps the second biggest deflationary pressure we have on wages and income.

So yeah, it's a big deal, even though we have no border in SC there are many thousands here in SC.

So, is this a problem with Capitalism too?

Apr 19, 2018, 7:38 PM

It breeds all kinds of problems. I think we should make ourselves a communist/socialist nation...

Why does the state of SC have to act tough? It's not really an issue here.

It's just lip service to voters to avoid talking real issues for this state. We ain't Arizona.
