Dabo or T. Elliott's Job?

Oct 16, 2021, 9:46 AM

I am going to assume the comments about Tony Elliott's play calling are by novice for this post. Because, I really do think that's the case honestly.

If the OL isn't giving sufficient running lanes or protection on passing plays is that T.Elliott or the position coach? If WR's are dropping a ton of passes and that's on the rare occasion they are getting open is that T. Elliott or the position coach? If the Quarter--back is throwing flat footed consistently, air-mailing simple swing passes, throwing balls at the WR or RB feet so on and so forth just not making plays so the play-makers have a chance to make plays on the ball - is that T.Elliott or the QB coach?

To me; not enough attention is being placed in these position coaches. Everyone has gotten a "convenient scapegoat" in Tony Elliott qued up to the point, these egregious non-adjustments are being ignored by the masses!

T. Elliott doesn't chose the QB coach and can't fire him! Yet, DJ in my opinion doesn't seem to be changing. All the plays coach Elliott calls aren't bad plays - despite the lynch-mob mentality about them. When the plays are there you get a flat footed DJU or a QB that appears to me to be hanging on to the ball too long then when he does throw it. That's QB Coach all Day - sorry!

When you are a Clemson WR playing against what Cuse, GT, NC State have at CB ( NCSU may get a 4 star on occassion) and you can't win your 1 on 1 ( that's a huge problem ). Why not? You talk about the routes not being creative - but a seven route done well is still hard to stop! Skinny post with what we have at WR vs. a flat footed safety is still a good play no matter who is calling the play. Yet, we don't win the 1 on 1 or when we do we are dropping the dang ball or the ball is "air mailed" and un-catchable!
The best RB in my opinion in school history last year looked average playing behind our OL and there has only been slight improvement this season! What's crazy is; if plays are blocked well; it's funny how much better the OC looks!

If Coach Elliott is in charge of hiring and firing those position coaches and "is not having some serious conversations" with them then he deserves all the blame "solely"! But, last I heard you win as a unit and lose as one as well. If it's the HC who assigns those positions and Dabo isn't willing to chew those folks out or remove them or give them some help - then it's on him. Bruce Arians is 62 and running plays he used years and years ago - they still work folks "because they block well and they have a QB that isn't going to air mail passes and WR's who can separate and get open and then catch it"! And teams go in knowing exactly what they like to do and have known what the man likes to do for years! And guess what; "it still works because it is about HOW THE PLAY THAT IS CALLED IS EXECUTED NOT THE PLAY CALL.

Whoever has that call should get the majority of all the readily available criticism! But, seems everyone is locked in on one culprit and now have blinders on.
But, I would take my not yet won lottery winnings and bet if you replace one or all three of those position coaches we would be significantly better on offense.

Question: what to date has Streeter done that makes everyone ignore his "contribution to this mess"? The OL recruiting hasn't been great so you can kind of give Coach C a pass; but it's not good. Star ranking wise we don't take a back seat to anyone at WR- but are guys getting better or staying who they are when they get on campus?

It's deeper than the play that is called! You have to look at the whole thing! Some teams make no mystery about what they will do offensively; yet it still works. It works because if it's not blocked well, x happens. If it's not thrown well or check out or into well, x happens by position coach. WR coaches make adjustments on the sideline as well. Lots of other dis function to go around and much of it to people who don't have not one but two National Championships under their belt. (enter the Coach J. Scott comments but don't listen to me list to Jeff Scott regarding Tony Elliott's contribution to those championships; he can say it better than me).
Folks aren't looking at the the details of this whole thing and jumping to an unfair conclusion i.m.o.

Our offense has personnel issues that give us round pegs

Oct 16, 2021, 9:57 AM

in square holes. We played our 3rd center last night. Can't help that. Our guy who was going to be the slot guy got Covid and may not play at all this year, and the future slot blew his knee out. Can't help that. DJ is not Trevor, or DW. I don't know what his future holds, but I'm also realistic enough to realize guys develop at different rates. Matt Jones was a 5th year senior before he got it. We have basically 3, healthy WR. Can't help that, and Ross is playing out of position out of necessity.

So what are the coaches doing? Working with what they have. They know the personnel issues that need to be addressed, but also know that isn't happening in October. And they are correct in their assessment. If we could just get out of our own way, and play as a unit, mismatched as it may be, the offense would be more than productive enough to win with this defense. So that's what they are focusing on, what they have control over right now

I agree most of the blame belongs on the offensive position coaches. The majority of whom had no previous coaching experience. If I had control over who to replace (which I don't, nor ever will), this is the order I would do it: 1) Caldwell. This is the one we all agree on. No development and terrible technique. Mitch Hyatt was the highest rated recruit on OL we had and he went undrafted. This move should have been made after the loss to Bama in the Sugar Bowl; 2) Streeter, how can you not win a Heisman with TL16? He did not get better than his Freshman season. And DJ just looks like a lost statue in the pocket; 3) Grisham, the WR play speaks for itself. We are WRU and these guys look like they belong at Northwestern; 4) Convince Elliot to take a Head Coaching position this offseason. We need new blood and vision in play calling. It should be someone with no ties to Clemson.

A win is a win, but a team that cannot score more than 21 pts is not a good team, let alone a championship caliber team. I remember the mid to late 90s and the suck-fest it was, so I will take 4-2 and a chance to still win the ACC.
