Greenville area residents - golf related questions

I know the fees and dues at Pebble Creek and Green Valley, but what are they at Greenville CC? And is the (I'm assuming higher initiation and dues) worth it? I like the idea of 2 courses like PC offers and definitely affordable rates, but I know GCC is much nicer, but at what cost? Any info appreciated on other courses appreciated too.

To even be considered, plus if you get in, deal with that crowd. I used to be a member @ Green Valley. For the money, Cherokee Valley is the nicest. Pebble Creek is a run of the mill course imo.

Cherokee is very nice and it's very picturesque. It's not as nice as it used to be but it's still much nice than most of the public courses around. VERY challenging too. Play it - you'll like it. It's my go to course.

down in Clinton is the best course in the Upstate, IMO. I checked into it once before and it was expensive though. Call them up and tell them you're thinking about joining and they'll let you play a round.

I agree BIGCU - unless you want to play the same course 4× plus per week and want the "status" that goes with joining a nice country club - just paying as you go is the way. You get variety and aren't tied down to one course

in the CHS area.. My "home" or "go to" course is Wescott Plantation or Stono Ferry, but I enjoy playing all the courses that CHS has to offer. However, with relocating to Gville a possibility, I was thinking about joining a club.

Willow Creek, Southern Oaks, Verdae Green, Brookstone Meadows, Furman, Cherokee Valley, Bonnie Brae and River Falls just to name a few.

Try Willow Creek, River Falls, and Southern Oaks.

Willow Creek in Greer (70.4 rating and a slope of 128) and Southern Oaks in Easley (70.4 rating and a slope of 119) are two very comperable courses. River Falls in Duncan, SC is the more difficult of the three IMO (132 solpe and 72.8 rating).

In the summer you don't have to wear a shirt or pants if you don't wish. I've seen women in bikinis out there. A lot of people aren't really playing golf there just paying to race the carts around and drink beer all day. Which is fun too. Grass doesn't appear to be cut but grazed on by cattle and the greens are burnt with gasoline. Whatever, the grass is short enough to find the ball. Better play orange ones just in case. The play is a bit schizo as some groups refused to play holes in order. Some even prefer teeing it up green to tee, so two groups may be playing the same hole in opposed directions. No use in yelling fore, just play with a helmet like the rest. Hazards-watch out for down live power lines and stray bullets. There must be a gun range close bc of all the machine gun fire that is heard. Other than that its a beautiful layout.

I know its sounds like common sense, but it all depends what you are looking for in a golf course. All of the clubs are pretty good options, but they offer different things. For example, Cherokee Valley is the best bet from an expense standpoint. it includes cart and practice facilities. The practice facilities are good. The range is always overseeded during the off-season. One drawback would be that weekends are usually rather busy. If you are a single, you are going to get paired up regularly on the weekend and it is a public course. It will be hit or miss on the pairing. It has some a mix of good holes and really bad holes. It does not play very long. A lot of driver(or less)-wedge holes. Another drawback would be the relationship of your residence/work. Cherokee Valley is the furthest from Downtown from all the courses mentioned before in this thread and below.
I haven't played Pebble Creek in a while. Linkside has always been the private side. There have been plenty of good players come out of there. However, there are some strange holes on both courses, especially the backside of Creekside. That's why when the county tournament is played there the committee tries to play the original 18 - front nine of creekside and a mix of holes from Linkside. I'm not sure about the monthly minimums out there, but I have heard the course is not as in good of shape as it has been before.
I recently joined Green Valley. I love the course and the owner is always seeking ways to improve the club and the course. It has several sets of tees and plays just under 7000 yards from the tips. With that said, it can get expensive. GVCC is looking to align itself with the likes of Thornblade (which is another option for you). The quarterly minimum for food and drink is $180 before tax and gratuity - but it includes alcohol and some private clubs do not. Another expense is the quarterly range fee of $50 (GVCC does use Titleist NXT Tours on the range and short-game area). Otherwise, its $10 a day to use the practice facilities. So, the obvious bet is to take the range fee. Cart fees are roughly $22 for 18 holes. If you are in the 30 to 39 age group, its going to cost you about $5,000 a year walking. With that being said, its also has essentially no initiation with the program in place. Plus, its about the only course out of any of those mentioned which is easy to get tee times. And if you don't get a tee time, even if you call the day of, you can usually get out around the time that you want to play. I'll probably evaluate the expense versus the return at the end of the year. But I'll be out there for at least a few years.
As mentioned, you can look at Thornblade. Its a $12,000 initiation fee and the monthly costs are similar to Green Valley. However, I think its membership categories go up at 35 to 39 and its close to the fees of the 40 and above at GVCC. Another thing about Thornblade is that tee times are booked almost immediately (can't remember if its 7 days or 14 days in advance). Also, club tournament spots are booked almost immediately as well. I don't have an extreme amount of knowledge otherwise. The layout is very good and of course its always in great condition. Its the longest course from the tips from all of those discussed in this thread.
Another private club in the area is Holly Tree. It will cost less than GVCC in both dues and minimums (no alcohol though). It has the same membership initiative (vanishing-initiation) as GVCC. No extra fee on the practice facilities (which are open on Monday even when the course is closed unlike GVCC). However, the practice facilities use limited flight balls. It is also a busy club. You are going to have to get with the men's group if you want to play Saturday morning. The course is enjoyable, but it does have some strange holes - almost every hole is a dogleg. The course is around 6850 yards on the scorecard from the tips, but it doesn't play it.
Some other good public options are Furman University Golf Club. The course layout is great, but they do like to keep the greens firm and fast. The greens have a lot of run-off throughout which limits short-game creativity. Verdae Greens (or the Preserve at Verdae) is also another option. Similar length to Furman. I haven't played out there is several years so I can't give you a great overview of the course. Costs of membership is available online for both of these.
There are also some good options - both public and private - in Spartanburg. But if you are wanting to stay in Greenville, then the above options are most likely your best bet. And of course, if you contact the private clubs, they will have you come out and give you a complimentary round of golf.

tips on the local courses. I am quitter familiar with all of the local courses and would like to offer some different perspectives. If you live on the east side of Greenville, there are several more courses you should consider. Carolina Springs converted their greens to Diamond Zoysia at the end of last summer and after some growing time this year ought to be excellent. They have more improvements planned for the course and as time goes on the course will get better and better. Fox Run, close to Carolina Springs used to be a neat little course, but I have not been around the course recently and can't comment on it's condition. Both facilities, are down toward Fountain Inn off Scuffletown Road. I think both have membership plans available or you can pay a daily green fee.
The real sleeper is Three Pines down in Woodruff - only a little over a half hour drive if you are on the east side of Greenville. That course is a hidden gem. It was professionally designed, not particularly long, but plenty challenging and extremely well maintained. The greens are an ultra-dwarf Bermuda and always in good shape. There are beautiful specimen trees all over the course and they keep them limbed up. Beautiful place. The good part is the dues, a little over $100 a month ($108, I think). Cart fee $11! The bad news. The membership is full and has a waiting list. If I didn't have a good arrangement at other local courses, my name would be on that waiting list.
