Lincoln Riley got me thinking (bad news for Coots)

Nov 29, 2021, 9:10 AM

It is clear that Riley saw a more realistic path to achieving his goals at USC vs OU.

I don't think we have seen it much yet (Mullen at Florida, but who else?), but how long before we see the SEC start poaching its own coaches? Already, Mark Stoops is a leading candidate at Oklahoma. Heck, I heard someone suggest this morning that BILLY NAPIER is a candidate at Oklahoma! Seriously, though, why wouldn't Stoops make that move if given the opportunity? Why wouldn't Kiffin upgrade to LSU or OK if given the chance? If you are in a 16 team conference and you are at best #7 or #8, why wouldn't you take the opportunity to move up the ladder.

Which brings us to SCAR. The jury is still out on Beamer, but SCAR is a bottom 5 program in the SEC. Either he fails as his predecessors have, or he has success and it is inevitable that someone (maybe even in his own conference) hires him away.

Eventually, the cannibalism within conferences will have a damaging effect, particularly on those programs trying to improve their position. I have seen numerous coordinators get promoted to head jobs in their own conference, but don't recall too many head coaches moving up the ladder.

Interesting theory, but over 100 years of history says that

Nov 29, 2021, 9:14 AM

the odds of a South Carolina coach having enough success that another SEC school would lure him away are less than those of the Titanic suddenly putting itself back together, rising off the ocean floor, and making it to New York, just a few decades late. Mechanical Camel and all!

Oklahoma might reach out to Venebles with his history there. I hope he wouldn't take it if offered, but I'm being selfish.

May happen with other coaches but the only way beamer is leaving SC is they fire him. He's pretty good friends with Dabo and wishes for a similar situation at Carolina. As was Dabo committed to Clemson, Shane's committed to South Carolina.

LOL, of course he wishes for a similar situation at SCAR

Nov 29, 2021, 10:03 AM

to what Dabo has at Clemson. I hope he is not holding his breath. Best case, I only have 40-50 years left on this Earth, and I don't see SCAR winning 6 SEC championships (or even division championships) in that time period, much less make 6 CFP appearances (even with 12 team format) or winning two titles!

Doesn't cost anything to wish for something, though!

OU may stay with an offensive minded coach or

Nov 29, 2021, 9:42 AM

they may not and go with a defensive minded coach, I read some about the coaches they had in mind from sec bias network ESPN. Matt Campbell at Iowa State would be a good one for them or Jamie Chadwell at Coastal Carolina there are a few very good coaches but not as much as years past. If the coach can not manage the team recruiting, assistant coaches, NIL, transfer portal and etc, its a very tough go for any coach in today's college football. I hope coach V if offered turns them down. Go Tigers

The coots will always be a doormat in the SEC. They are adding teams that are much better than them.

Re: Lincoln Riley / thinking: Possible GOOD news for Coots

A previous post in TNet by 76er® opened up my mind.

S.Carolina could theoretically win in a BIG BIG way as evidenced by the L.Riley to USC path. Here's how.

S.Carolina could buy their way into getting a top HC. It would cost a pile of $$$, but if they were committed and FAST they could pull this off.

The 'previous' school's HC takes U of S.Carolina's $25MM offer; U of S.Carolina gets a buy-out clause of $50MM as 'insurance.'

U of S.Carolina then funds the hiring of 'previous' school's top assistant coaches ... coughing up another $10 MM to get them on board.

U of S.Carolina's 'new' HC then (a) gets the recruits from 'previous' school to flip -and- (b) uses the Portal Potty to get the stars from 'previous' school to come to USC.

U of S.Carolina goes instantly from Fee C's to Sugar ... finally hits the big time.

Got to spend big $$$ to do it, but they actually have a path which could get them to the top before the Apocalypse arrives. (Or maybe U of S.Carolina reaching the top IS a sign of the Apocalypse.)
