are worthless mindless trash shows that run for decades yet critically acclaimed shows like Arrested Development, Friday Night Lights, etc struggle not to get canceled every year they run.
Really? What's up with that?

One thing that I can think of is that NCIS, etc. is a new show each week in that they really don't build on a timeline and you don't really have to know what happened the show before or the season before. But, in shows like Friday Night Lights, you have to be able to follow the story arc from week to week so it's hard just to pick up the show in the middle of the season.
Just my $.02.

As a former television producer from Los Angeles, perhaps I can weigh in. NCIS shows are cheap to produce, provide mindless stimulation and are pleasantly predictable for the audience. This all culminates into a massive advertising revenue model. In reference to Friday night lights, a show I’ve watched twice all the way through, it discusses religion and good human values as a form of succeeding and being a good person. However, the further we progress away from being a literate society into a post literate society, the greater the chasm grows between ego and the need for morality, and thus, the need for God. Netflix is God. Instagram is God. I don’t mean that literally. It’s just that there are few moments where people aren’t on their phones filling some type of anxious impulse to feel needed, to feel importance and significant. Heck, I’m filling my time here right now. I could, instead, be thinking, praying and envisioning a better future for myself and family (and hopefully our Tiger’s passing game). But instead I’m here.
That’s probably a longer answer than you expected but that’s what happens when I drink two espressos back to back.

And (I think) those shows can basically regurgitate plots for new episodes knowing that their audience already likes that stuff.
The more clever shows have to keep a storyline running.
Arrested Development may have been too smart of a comedy in a lot of sense.
