Ortre Smith picked USC over Clemson because he wanted

to be the big fish in the small pond. That pond is looking really small tonight.
He told teammates at Wando that he could be more visable to pro scouts if he was a more of a stand out on a lesser team. In his mind, he could accomplish that more at USC.
I don't really think he thought that through but what do I know?
Do you think it helps him or hurts him? I think about a better offensive line, QB, and surrounding cast that make you look better.
I don't know if I completely fault his logic though. If he is good enough he makes it either way. The WR we lost to Florida comes to mind though he name escapes me.
Does Clemson even need a player with that mindset? Thoughts?

The one part wrong is that Clemson basically told him secondary was his option with Clemson. Your source can tell you all he wants, but Smith would not have seen the field at WR except mop up duty or someone got hurt. Same with Edwards now. He is getting a chance to shine at USUCK cause basically, it's him and Samuel, and that's about it.

I hadn't heard that. Is he getting his signals mixed with Shi Smith. We offered Ortre as a WR and Edwards as a safety.

Sometimes I hate posting things like this because of all the hate you get on this board. I got idiots correcting my God-awful spelling, etc.
I just thought I would add a little insight form what I heard. Excuse me.

In your defense, people should really refrain from criticizing obvious typo's. I'm completely confident that you know how to spell liar and simply mis-typed lair. It is really easy to make errors like this, like typing their instead of there, and spell checkers can't catch these types of mistakes. Criticizing these types of mistakes is really asinine and people shouldn't have to worry about catching grief for making such simple mistakes. Sometimes, this forum could really use a little bit more friendliness and tolerance.

I'm pretty sure both we were offered at safety. I'll check with someone tomorrow.

We originally offered Ortre as a TE because we had eyes on a bigger fish in James Robinson. After that ship sailed, we eyed Ortre as a WR. Clemson only wanted Bryan Edwards and Shi Smith as safeties

I actually got to play basketball with him in some school event. He is extremely well-built and athletic but a TE seems more fitting for him.

He's quite the physical specimen that is for sure. I hate that we are losing out on him but I can certainly understand why he is choosing those goons in the mid-state. What I can't wrap my legs around is why Xavier Thomas is still even considering them...at all...

when you grow up with family, role models, etc., who are devoted coots - and don't sell 'Mom or Dad's alma mater' short - their blood runs garnet and black and there's no changing that.
I don't follow the kids or recruiting that closely, and get the majority of my intel from tnet posters and the occasional tigernet or fb reference and mention, but do seem to recall a mention of Xavier Thomas' childhood devotion/like of Carolina.

Oh, he probably isn't lieing, but what Smith probably isn't saying is that Clemson didn't want him as a wide receiver. Would be a bit of let down telling your friends that Clemson pulled their offer cause they got Rodgers and Higgins, and wanted him to change positions. That's my take on it.

No if that's his mindset we don't need him. Players need to have the mindset that if they put in work Dabo will play the senior guy. You only need one year of top level production to get taken in the top end of the draft. It happens all the time. Guys that are afraid of the work with no accolades for a couple of years aren't cut from championship cloth. If Hunter Johnson starts for 3 years at an elite level and Trevor Lawrence only starts as a senior and takes us to the playoffs and gets invited to NY he will end up in the NFL like he would have anyway.

DeMarcus "Bud" Robinson is the WR that went to Florida and he plays for the Chiefs, surprisingly. He would have gotten coached up at Clemson, had more exposure as a WR, and received a better rookie deal. He did make it into the NFL, nevertheless.

I think a couple of things..

He knows we are absolutely stacked at WR and so he saw the opportunity at USCjr. USCjr will have some good WR's with Smith and Edwards, but will they have the OL? I could see that kid Bentley being solid in a couple of years. He has potential to be above average. There is so much more than that though to be have a good O. Their OL sucks. Will they be able to run the ball. Their D will suck too. The Coots will be better in a couple of years, but a great year for them will be something like 8-5.

I wouldn't say better. Uga, Florida, Tenn still recruit better and games are won and lost generally in the trenches. This is where Clemson has the advantage and will have for a while. Winning 6 games against teams with a combined record of 25-46 is not a great tool for recruiting.

Well if this comment is true, then he's at the right school. Dabo wants young men that are team players, not me players. This is why Muschump fails, as he creates a divisive culture because he recruits talent only and dismisses the personality and integrity of his players.. Football is a team sport, not a me sport! Failure at SCjr is inevitable IMHO!
