Orange Bowl suspension update

Dec 29, 2015, 9:49 PM

We chose to withhold the players’ names until we could get more confirmation, but at this time we can say that freshman wide receiver Deon Cain, kicker Ammon Lakip, and tight end Jay Jay McCullough have all been sent home from the Orange Bowl.

All three players were informed around the time of practice Tuesday afternoon. At this time, we aren’t sure about their futures with the program.

We won’t get anything official from the school tonight, but we do have a previously scheduled press conference with head coach Dabo Swinney at 8:30 in the morning.

If there is good news in all of this, Clemson has plenty of depth at wide receiver and walk-on kicker Greg Huegel told David Hood today that he was prepared to take over extra points, if needed.

Problem is without Williams and Cain we have no true deep threat.

Between Scott, renfrow, Leggett, and McCloud we are set in the short to intermediate game. However peake is no deep threat. He NEVER high points the ball. He's just tall. There is now absolutely zero deep threat. This will be a huge issue.

Re: Orange Bowl suspension update

Dec 29, 2015, 9:57 PM

Cain is a big loss because he had proven to be a deep threat, but McCloud can be that guy and Artavis Scott can be that guy (he looked the best he's been all season).

To be honest, the guy I think will make the biggest impact in the game will be Jordan Leggett.

It hasn't been attempted to anybody else. That doesn't, necessarily, mean there is no other option. Just like when he was suspended before, we were fine. Same with Sammy Watkins. I hate it happened, but I'm not going to think the sky just fell and will continue to fall because we lost a couple of guys who broke rules they knew very well they were breaking. I hope all learned a lesson.

Dec 29, 2015, 9:55 PM

Peake deesn't like to go up and get the ball, but I am not saying he can't and prove most of us wrong. Thompson has serious potential. He just seems to always just come up short of getting his finger tips on the ball. He always gets so close, but only close. I am hoping Thompson has a breakout performance.

Yeah, but Cain is a true deep ball threat. Average YPC is double Peake or Thompson. Also has more yards than Peake on half the catches.

and support the players, come on, man! They're playing in the National Championship Playoff! They couldn't wait a week? Or just not do it at all? They know it's wrong! I have a newborn baby, and a good job. The last thing I'm going to do is something that would jeopardize the well-being of either. When I was young and single, I used to bar hop (and probably could've gotten a DUI). But, I didn't really have anything (that I realized at the time) to lose. These guys do! Their "newborn baby" is the National Championship, and their job is Clemson Football. Their priorities were out of whack when they decided the risk was worth the reward. I get it... they're young, pot is prevalent, times are changing, it's legal in Colorado. But, it costs you big here. Ultimately, a decision was made. And it was the wrong one.

There are consequences for poor choices. This team does not need those selfish young men to win this game against Oklahoma. Moreover, this team does not need those type of young men to taint the hard-earned image and respect that all of the players have worked for all year.

Big lessons to be learned here, but the game will go on, with or without them, and The Real Clemson Tigers will win.

First, you didn't post the link.

Second, does anyone believe that Lakip (known offender), McCullough (known offender) and Cain (suspected offender) were selected at random? I'd like to see the list of players on the Oklahoma team who were tested... and Alabama... and MSU...

I only want to know that other teams were tested, and players were selected by the same standards, for the sake of consistency.

As for the three Clemson players suspended, I can only say, "shame on you... now you know that actions have consequences..."

As for the true Tigers who will take the field Thursday afternoon, I'm proud of you, and I'm behind you all the way! AND I MEAN ALL THE WAY, TIGERS!

according to link, it appears it was not NCAA drug test

Dec 30, 2015, 3:16 AM

"When will student-athletes be notified of their selection for drug testing?

At team championships (baseball, basketball, bowling, field hockey, football, ice hockey, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, volleyball, water polo), immediately after the game, an NCAA drug-testing crewmember will provide an institutional representative with a list of student-athletes who have been selected for drug testing."

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly what I was thinking.

Dec 30, 2015, 7:40 AM

That makes me think the coaches got wind of something and took preemptive measures. Specifically, one or more teammates must have tipped the coaches that those three would fail if tested after the game. Better that it comes out now than to hold your breath and hope the NCAA doesn't test a player who participated and he fail.

I don't know this personally, but if the tests were internally done, then it'd be up to the opposing teams to do their tests...but not required. Otherwise, it's all due to our coaches decision and honestly, I don't blame the coaches. It's all those players fault. No one else is to blame here.

If it is an internal test, then the mamas of these players are gonna love the fact we put the hammer down and make no exceptions. I refuse to believe Clemson is the only U with drugs such as weed circulating, but commend our coaches for the discipline. These kinds of trips so far away from campus can lead to bad behavior...

My thought exactly. You do the tests, send the players home so the NCAA does not get to them. Standard breach of team rules.

Well those young men made about as stupid a decision as they could make. Sorry but Jay Jay And Ammon Lakip should be dismissed from team. Both have made the same mistakes now twice. Deon Cain should be put in the dog house but given a chance to redeem himself. Hope the team stays focused regardless the stupidity and selfishness displayed by a few of their team mates.
GOOOOO TIGERS!! #OU WHOOOOOO

When behavior is repeated, it's no longer a mistake.

It's a lack of character and should be removed like a cancer. Seems like it wasn't the NCAA, thus no requirement at this point for the other three playoff teams to comply. I wonder if the NCAA may require testing after the games on Thursday evening. If so, I'm hoping we're immune.

I could not agree with you more about Lakip and Jay Jay. They both have a track record now and it seems breaking the teams/NCAA rules are more important to them. This is a serious first strike against Mr. Cain and if Dabo decides to let him stay on the team then he needs more than a 3 game suspension. I know most of my fellow Tiger fans will agree with me on this, football is a team sport and these 3 individuals are/were members of a great team. Therefore the TEAM should have came before any thing to include their personal decision to use drugs.

I do not care if it was for recreational use or what drug it was, all schedule 1 narcotics are illegal. Therefore not only did these young men break team rules, and NCAA rules, they also broke the law. They need to be held accountable for their actions.

I hope the TEAM will pull together and show the Nation that football is about the TEAM not the individual players. The TEAM is what got our beloved TIgers to where they are and the TEAM will either succeed or give their best trying. Yes I am disappointed in these 3, but my Tigers will never disappoint me.

GO TIGERS!!! Kick A** and bring home the National Championship!!

On a side note: maybe Dabo should look into assigning mentors for these young men when they enter into college to try to keep them clean and on the right track. As we have seen in the NFL in recent years when college coaches look the other way instead of correcting the behavior, the behavior carries over into their careers i.e. Aaron Hernandez, Rae Curruth, Michael Vick, and Nate Newton (just to name a few). Great players on the field, but not upstanding citizens off the field.

The importance of recreational drugs in someone's life...

...is something that I will never be able to mentally grasp.

There is something so primal, so driven, so almost genetically programmed into their DNA, a dependency so powerful that it seems to be like the need to breath oxygen.

It seems to be like a moth to a flame, and NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING, that the individual can do about it. Amazing...just amazing.
