So much of the offensive side of the ball is squarely in the cross hairs this year.

Hopefully he can lead a reset of our entire receiver core across the board with renewed pass routes, more completed passes and runs after catches, and a significantly faster-paced offense which will get us back to the 75-90 offensive plays per game we have gotten away from the last two seasons which spells success!

Good to hear some acknowledgement of the problems we had last year. Ready to see some improvement this fall.

May 17, 2022, 8:41 AM

It's also to be expected when your QB can't get a football within 5 yards of the receivers you're coaching.

Glad to hear an acknowledgement of the issues. Of course, everyone knows the issues. I am interested in whether Mr. Grisham has the intangibles necessary (at this level) to effectively communicate what he wants to see happen on the field. He is not a player anymore can't catch the passes himself. He has to be able to get these guys to where they are all on the same page and can excel. Communicate, motivate, accelerate. It's going to be an interesting season to watch and see if the new coaches have what it takes to play championship caliber football.

Is part of his job telling Streeter & Dabo

May 17, 2022, 9:41 PM

which QB his receivers have the most confidence in?

We have the horses at WR. Lots of confidence in a healthy EJ, Adam Randall and Beaux. Dacari is coming on, Ngata has been Dabo's favorite WR for 3 years, Spector is back, Stellato & Antonio Williams have strong potential, and there may be some hidden diamonds. Hope to see the top players on the field that spent the entire summer in a field somewhere building confidence & chemistry with Cade and DJ.

We have an entire coaching staff that is the Tommy Bowden football teams alumni squad.

Clemson has fallen from the grace of national elite and back down to Auburn tier.
Last season in the stadium seat West End Zone felt like the 2000s.

** Clemson faithful need to wake up and truly assess our situation. The delusion is killing us.

No.

Auburn was 6-7 last year……..that ain’t remotely the same as 10-3.
Auburn would give a kidney and a lung to have our last 10 years and Auburn has NEVER had a 10 year period like Clemson just had.

One last thing on Auburn…..Auburn is next on the Alltime Wins List, 10 wins in front of Clemson. Clemson will go by them just like the last 10 teams we past.

Auburn plays in the SEC West and Clemson in the ACC. If Clemson played Auburn’s schedule then who’s to say Clemson goes 10-3?

Say what you will, but the SEC West is far and away the best division in College Football!

Re: Yeah, Tyler ... good for T.Grisham for owning up

May 17, 2022, 8:29 PM

Sure, T.Grisham's unit wasn't the only problem last year, but rather than blaming the other positions / position coaches for the WR unit's dismal 2021 performance, he owned up to it.

Since the OP was about the WR unit, Grisham's response by owning up to his part of the problem is a great start.

Can he coach the WRs up this season? That's the money question.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Spot on. Shoot the spring game was a dropfest.

May 18, 2022, 7:25 AM

All I know is that they haves summer to figure it out. As SocMan said, DJ and his WRs should be throwing, throwing, and throwing some more from now until August.

Re: There was A LOT of blame to go around...

May 17, 2022, 1:36 PM [ in reply to There was A LOT of blame to go around... ]

Oh boy, you got that right!!! But it's IMO that Grisham will have to do what Jeff Scott had to do. That was take a few of his best receivers, and coach them up to play within our offensive system, and hopefully they will become of the best receivers in the ACC bc, without the recognition of being one of the best WR's coaches in the ACC, he will never bring in the top receivers from around the country like Jeff Scott done many times during his WR coaching years at Clemson.

If I worked for Dabo as a WR coach, I think I would ask Dabo if I could spend part of an off season with Jeff Scott, and hopefully learn from Jeff what he had to do, and how he done it to become one of the best WR coaches in the country. And Jeff had to be one of the best bc, he brought in some of the best talent in the country, and he coached them up to be 1st, and 2nd round NFL draft picks, and most of those guys are still playing in the NFL as productive receivers with big NFL contracts!!!

I don't know if they were running bad routes but they certainly

May 17, 2022, 12:29 PM

weren't getting separation often. DJ was obviously not good last year, but he also wasn't helped out with any easy throws. Watch just about any top tier offense and you will see multiple plays in a game where they have a guy running wide open either through scheme or just elite route running. We haven't had much of that in awhile - even during alot of Trevor's time here.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Drops & poor synchrony between QB & WRs was a BFD

May 17, 2022, 8:34 PM

Drops, poor blocking, and the disconnect between what the QB and WRs were seeing led to the biggest part of last year's dismal offensive performance.

Whether the WRs were running bad routes, or whether DJ didn't know the routes ... probably a lot of both ... has got to be (and can be) fixed with good coaching.

Last year was the mulligan. This year better hit it long and straight down the fairway.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's hard (for me) to tell when a bad route was run, but yes

Re: It's hard (for me) to tell when a bad route was run, but yes

May 17, 2022, 8:39 PM

Nah ... DJ's fastballs (as long as thrown reasonably close to within the WR's catch radius) were not the problem.

I can tell you that any decent WR (or even a good one in HS) can catch any QBs fastball as long as the ball is thrown with the catch radius.

This isn't football toss among half drunk beer drinkers during pre-game tailgate like me.

If not thrown fast and hard to the WRs, then the DB's will have a pic picnic on us.

Two exceptions:

(1) Fastballs thrown outside of the WRs catch radius. The biggest problem in this case is accuracy, not speed of the pass.

(2) Swing passes to the RBs. These are short distance passes where the RB is running parallel to the direction of the pass. A softer pass is OK because the defender is not close, and also necessary because the RB's catch radius on a swing pass is very small. The softer pass allows the RB to 'expand his catch radius' and make the play successful.

May 18, 2022, 6:59 AM [ in reply to Re: It's hard (for me) to tell when a bad route was run, but yes ]

There are balls that qbs throw that are good catchable balls and others throw that are really hard to catch for whatever reason.

Yep, and that was one of things that Jeff Scott done well, he coached our receivers to play within the offensive system that we played in, and his receivers were mostly always where they needed to be to catch, and advance the ball for plus yards!!! Please God, bring Jeff Scott back to Clemson to help out our WR's;)

Re: Jeff Scott ain't coming back; T.Grisham must develop WRs

We need to stop dreaming about Jeff Scott returning to Clemson (which is somewhat unlikely) and completely flush away dreams that he'd come back as a WR coach.

I think the loss of Jeff Scott...

May 17, 2022, 9:36 AM

left a much bigger void than a lot of people realized.

You now have Grisham and Spiller serving in key coaching roles and neither had any prior coaching experience.

Grisham's last NFL season was in 2011. He then spent two years (2014-2015) as a GA and four years (2016 through 2019) as an offensive analyst before Dabo promoted him in 2019 to replace Jeff Scott.

May 17, 2022, 10:37 AM [ in reply to I’m shocked that an inexperienced coach who was arguably underqualified for the position ]

I disagree with this sentiment so much.

2020: Grisham was without his best WR (Ross) all year, never had a fully healthy Ngata and Ladson, but still turned Amari Rodgers into a 1,000 yard receiver and Cornell Powell into a 5th round pick.

2021: He was forced to play Ross out of position in the slot, then lost 7 scholarship WRs throughout the year, and had a QB that was struggling with his accuracy.

We finished the season with Beaux, Dacari, and Will Swinney as our starting WRs. Grisham is taking the blame like any good leader would. But, as fans, we should know that he was dealt a terrible hand his first two seasons.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don’t think anyone is denying that he has had to deal with a lot of adversity.

May 17, 2022, 9:33 PM

But there was no excuse last year for the poor blocking, route running, and catching that we saw from most every receiver on our team.

Even the guys who are “only” three star recruits should be able to execute the basics. Last year, they didn’t.

I also saw a lack of consistent hustle from our receivers last year. That never seemed to happen in prior years, at least that I can recall.

Of course our QB issues played a role in the passing game woes we had, but it’s a cop out to blame all of our issues on that.

I like Tyler, he’s a good guy and is working hard. I think he knows a lot about football. But our receivers need to have a better year this year. We are nowhere close to “WR U” right now.

I do think Randall and Williams were good recruits who have a lot of potential. Hopefully we can hang onto Joseph as well.

Re: I don’t think anyone is denying that he has had to deal with a lot of adversity.

May 19, 2022, 8:27 AM

Last year, most of our starters were forced to play out of position. Ngata, Ladson, Ross, and EJ are all field WRs. They are all big, tall, vertical threats. They were forced to play out of position in the slot or the boundary. They were forced to be Hunter Renfrow and Amari Rodgers. Of course they struggled. They aren't built for those positions.

It's like moving an offensive guard to tackle and watching them struggle against edge rushers. Sure, we can blame the coaches for not developing them, but the reality is that they just aren't built for that position. That's what happened to our WRs last year. They were forced to play out of position and they struggled. Then they all basically get hurt and we finished with Will Swinney and two true freshmen that probably weren't ready.

I can't bring myself to blame Grisham for that.

Grisham had a LOFT problem last year because of injuries and there was not much that could be done with zero receivers that scared the opponents. Hopefully recruiting and healthy people will make a difference this year.

Re: TNET: Tyler Grisham feels like he failed last season, eager for a bounce back year

May 17, 2022, 10:36 AM

I think Coach Grisham did the best he could do with the players he had. The injuries in just about every offensive position contributed to the woes he had to deal with. QB play was also a contributing factorwoth receivers. There has to be drastic improvement at QB with DJ, which I really didn't see in Spring Game to any extent. Case will have to be 100% ready to step up if needed. There is alot of talent on the Offensive side of the ball. Time to step up and produce. GO TIGERS!!!

Nice to see some accountability. All the good ones recognize there is always room for improvement. That's an understatement by comparison to what we've had in the past. We need to develop a deep threat(s) downfield this year and find a " possession " receiver for the slot as well as providing any help he can to ensure our tight ends get more involved.

May 17, 2022, 5:43 PM

if that is part of the problems with the offense. It's on Grisham to teach & re-teach the guys and if they can't learn them, then they ride the pine until they can. As far as the drops, I believe it's OK for GA's to run the JUGS machine all summer long--if they still can't, ride the pine. If it's still the injuries, get into shape by STRETCHING and lifting. For 2022 to go well, it's on Grisham to get guys ready during the summer and not be doing "on the job training" this fall.

Could not at all understand what Grisham was trying to say; his comments just did not make sense...or he did not articulate his thoughts very well at all. We appreciate it when a coach owns up to what they may have failed in...although we still can't tell what he was talking about?

This is a heckuva lot more honest of a response with tangible items for improvement laid out then we got from the former OC.

All TE could say was didn't understand why it wasn't working, it should be working, players did not know their positions, players were hurt, it should be working, players did not know their positions, players were hurt, it should be working...but he didn't understand why it wasn't working...

This is all I need to see to know our WR corp is going to be OK and on the upswing this season. Way to go Grish, that's a coach and a man right there.
