So Mafah is considered 4 th or 5 th string and comes in during a huge game and gets 7 carries for 58 yards for an 8.3 avg and looks and plays great. Totally proving he should get reps and can contribute. Of course the coaches think he should have been redshirted and “develop”.
They won’t even give TP a series or two while the chosen one continues to play poorly. Yes DJ was better last night and there were 3 or 4 drops , but he’s missing way too many throws and there’s just no consistency. I don’t think the coaches trust him to throw it in short yardage at all and we’ve become very predictable in that situation. We’re 5 games into the season and he’s not executing to the level he needs to. When the NCAA stats come out this week , I’m pretty sure he won’t be in the top 100 in QB efficiency. Of course if they play TP a few series and he performs, then they would really have to eat crow and that wouldn’t be very nice.

I think Dabo promised DJU the starting spot when Trevor left and now he don’t want to go back on that. Imagine the uproar.

Well, Dabo was true to his word and he got the starting spot , but he hasn’t played well enough to keep it. He may still start , but TP and the rest of the team deserves a series or two at this point.

No DJU was named the starter because when he filled in last year he looked like 90-95% of Trevor and every 2023 NFL mock draft had him in the top 5. And I guarantee you that probably nobody on this board had an issue with DJU starting on Aug 31

Stupid post. You should be able to change your mind given new information. Yes, I thought DJ was going to be amazing August 31. I thought he might end up a better pure passer than Trevor. We now have a 5 game trial where we have now seen he's not the QB we thought he was right now. Last Spring, we saw TP outplay DJ. But now, while DJ has one of the five worst stat lines in the P5, you want to keep the guy we thought was better when we had a small sample size.

We need to realize the only reason DJ was gifted the starting spot was because TP was hurt in the spring game. There was no one to challenge DJ.

I expect TP to transfer after the season and they likely agreed that he will not play >4 games this year. Not that we’ll have much garbage time… Frankly, I’d rather see Helms play, but why bother?
Very curious if the situation would have been any different had TP not been injured in the spring game. The coaches get a bit of a pass in this situation now because of that.
In a normal world, DJ’s play would have probably gotten him the hook by now, but now coaches have to fear the transfer portal and manage around that. For better or worse, it gives the players a whole lot more power than the past.
Maybe there is just a huge gap in talent visible in practice, so they know TP wouldn’t be fairing any better out there. I haven’t seen anything from TP to get me excited about his potential.
Best case here could be DJ making improvements throughout this season and into next year. In 2022, DJ becomes a solid B+ QB and the talent around him improves significantly. Cade can come on board, get big reps, but not be in a position to have to save the team or be embroiled in a QB controversy.
We all had high hopes for DJ and there is still plenty of time for him to meet expectations, but the fact is that he should be holding a clipboard this year and preparing for his shot as the #1 guy next year. We just don’t have a serviceable #2 and certainly no one worth investing reps in as a potential future starter.
I recognize there is plenty of blame to go around and the offense’s struggles are not all DJ’s fault. The fans’ frustration and desire to see if anyone else can play better is legitimate, but I just don’t think that plays out any better with much more downside.

I agree that that would be the best case scenario. However, I think the coaches will gladly start Cade next season if DJ continues to stink things up. Unlike this season, they will actually have someone that is a viable alternative. I think the coaches are coddling DJ and saying all the right things because they don't think they have any choice this season. The moment that changes they will move on from him. I'd say the most likely scenario is that they give DJ a game or two next season (at most) then bench him for Cade. Then we will have another Kelly Bryant situation and he will leave.

oh yeah. i can't see anything going wrong with bringing in the kid who the coaches don't even trust enough to rotate in for a series or two. have you considered the idea that maybe TP ain't very good at the moment, and that DJ is a couple steps above him? He is the kid who beat the brakes off BC last year and nearly got us a win at ND.

Am I the only person that remembers the spring game ? If TP is healthy, there’s no doubt he can execute the offense with some degree of success. Remember, this is the same staff that thought Mahfa should redshirt! If they don’t think that TP can get it done , then it’s a further indictment on their ability to recruit and develop players. BC’s backup came within an eyelash of getting a huge win last night in a big road game. Quite frankly, I thought he played better than DJ and had it not been for an errant snap , I think we’d be having a different conversation this morning.

Dude has nerves and was terrible for 3.5 quarters, one good drive, in a spring game, is worthless. Have you watched him when he comes in for mop up duty the last 2 years, besides turning it over 80% of the possessions he’s played for 2 years, he looks shook and rattled. There is a reason DJ is playing all the snaps, he’s our best and only viable option.

Redshirting him doesn’t imply that he has no talent. We clearly hit on our RB recruiting analysis. It’s roster management. Its not a conspiracy or bad coaching. It would have been nice to put a class between them.
It’s likely a moot point now due to injury.

I think we can all agree that TP is not a star and is never going to be one at Clemson.
Play this out… Let’s say TP comes in and plays 10% better than DJ and the receivers make couple more plays. Are we in a better position going with TP down the stretch?
Probably not a good sign that the general consensus is that DJ would immediately leave the program if he got sat too. I don’t think we get this certain about Kelly Bryant transferring when TL came on board…

With the schedule in front of us, 10% better QB play would probably guarantee at least a10-3 finish ( At Pitt doesn’t look good) . So heck yeah, I’d take 10% better .

He was a 4 star QB coming out of high school. He proved he was good enough in last years spring game. Go back and watch that game today and I think you’d change your mind.

off of spring training stats as base QB's readiness off a spring game where he can't be hit and the defense doesnt do anything deceptive and is fielding second and third stringers at multiple positions
