Well COVID has killed the bowls

Dec 27, 2021, 6:02 AM

I have never been a great advocate of expanding the playoffs, but bring it on. It’s a new day. Bowls are now irrelevant.

Opt out and Transfer Portal have also

Dec 27, 2021, 6:14 AM

dramatically changed bowl landscape.

At some point, even "after" COVID, this is going to happen. When will sponsors and cities say..."We've had enough" and pull money and sponsorships?

Players are, in some cases, starting to kill their Golden Goose.

Re: Opt out and Transfer Portal have also

The NCAA screwed it up. They had a chance to be the adults in the room and say "We're sticking with our amateur model. It's not our fault the NFL won't let these kids play in their league." But, instead, they gave us a professional model with players having agents, endorsement deals, but zero contractual obligations. Players are perpetual free agents.

They tried to get out ahead of SCOTUS

Dec 27, 2021, 10:45 AM

before they make it even worse, but it’s only a matter of time. Kavanaugh thinks they should be paid directly and will likely have four more join him if that issue comes up. If some school decides it wants to truly buy a championship, it can sue the NCAA for the right to pay players, and win with this supreme court.

So what will you say when opt out happen in the playoffs. It's going to happen. Keep it at 4. Less bowls. I love the regular season. It means something.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can't see teams opting out of playoff except for COVID

Dec 27, 2021, 9:53 AM

And in that case, the opponent should get a bye

I would love to keep it at 4, but if we do, we could lose one of the 4 to COVID (hoping it doesn't happen this year. At least an expanded field would ensure that we at least get semifinals and finals.

I think the other bowls are on the way out. Will be interesting to see how the landscape changes in the next few years.

I think the admin, media, and players will proceed and play the games with their cold like symptoms if it’s a playoff game.

Of course not, but hopefully we can have at least 4

participants. Some of these cancellations sound like they are more the result of injuries and COVID precaution than actual cases. The minor bowls have always been money losers for the participants, so I think we will see more and more of these now that the door has been opened.

Simple cost - risk - benefit analysis.

Dec 27, 2021, 8:22 AM

There’s insufficient financial benefit or intangible benefits to overcome the cost of team travel plus the potential health / legal risks, albeit minimal.

Covid tipped the scales _ when factoring in health and legal risks.

Teams are using Covid as an excuse.

I’m not minimizing Covid. We lost a family member and we are all vaccinated. But in this case teams are using Covid as an excuse to do something they were going to do anyway. If we didn’t have Covid they would be using some other excuse. They just don’t want to be there. The instant gratification mentality has made people believe the bowls are meaningless and if you are not in the playoffs is isn’t worth playing. This is a societal problem not a Covid problem.

Covid protocols need to change. As variants become more common, one fact is emerging. They are far less severe and can be spread by vaccinated or non-vaccinated equally. The NFL is figuring it out. Testing positive is no longer the stake in the ground. You must also exhibit symptoms such as fever or coughing. If you are asymptomatic, you are still good to go. The rest of society will eventually catch on.

Bowls have never been relevant but the portal, covid and opt outs make it seem worse. Adding to the playoffs requires a shorter season because asking college players to play more than 15 games is a huge issue.

I would make the hollowing changes to help CFB move to a middle ground:

1) if a player quits a team (regardless of the reason) during the season (include post season games) said player would be responsible for reimbursing the school for the cost of attendance for that fall semester.

2) portal would be open in the following months: January, February, April, May and June

With these changes players still have mobility but in a way which is manageable for the teams

Been a total of 4781 deaths in the 18-29 age group this year with Covid. As reported. So that number is likely inflated. With, as opposed to from. Also, there is no designation for those with comorbidities. There are 53 million in that age group. That is a .009 percent just based on these numbers. They are more at risk riding in the bus.

So you can play snarky games there?

I've never figured out why you people who parrot the party line think you're the smartest in the room(in direct contradiction to any measurable data).

Fact is that Bowl games are only slightly beneficial to the health-challenged boosters and family members. They are primarily for the programs, players and promoters. (Otherwise the seats would be filled). There are many ways to have bowls without putting aged people at serious risk.

Having visited SC three times over the holiday very few are taking precautions such as masks or distancing. Testing players with no symptoms is nuts given the rest of SC is business as usual. Your thought that testing players somehow protects others is silly at best

Great. Let’s get rid of all of them. The season is too long. Who cares to play a meaningless came and have an extra 3 weeks of practice.
Most bowls have few in attendance and tv ratings are tanking

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Well COVID has killed the bowls

Dec 27, 2021, 4:24 PM

The three extra weeks of practice is the biggest benefit of making a bowl game. They might as well allow all teams the extra three weeks of practice and see what bowls have enough interest in them to be profitable.
