Open Football Tryouts at Clemson

Sep 20, 2022, 8:42 AM

For any of you wondering about open tryouts after watching the Eli Manning bit, I’ve got a warning for you. You can’t just show up and expect to have Dabo admire your hose.

It’s not like lying about your handicap to get into the C Flight of an amateur golf tour event for an easy W. They will check up on the stuff you put on the application ahead of time. It’s all quite frustrating and probably prevents a couple of potential key contributors from getting looks from the staff every year. I wonder if these are decisions by some mid-level staffer who wears glasses and has never slid an extra sock into some tight uniform pants before running on the field or if Dabo and the AD don’t know what’s happening behind the scenes.

You’ve also got to be a “full time” student, and not just anywhere. I’ll give Clemson a pass on this because it is probably some nonsensical requirement by the NCAA.

I also think that some of the coaches don’t want to look bad as the result of overlooking some kid during the recruiting process, especially if that kid almost had two single game JV school receiving records in a season and a half at Easley. Those same coaches can easily turn a 4.5 forty into a 5.4 with a slow thumb. Only the scholarship athletes get electronically timed. It’s just one more example of how some people are born with privilege and some have to have to settle with having an extremely above average sense of smell.

If you’ve read all this and still want to give it a go, start training for August and good luck.

Go Tigers!

We're talking about James Franklin though...

Sep 20, 2022, 9:02 AM

he's not opposed to any little wrinkle or edge to put himself over. He's a bend the rules type of coach. Surprised he didn't ask Eli to put his makeup back on and act like he's another guy going forward.

Did you not see the part where he met with James Franklin first?

Sep 20, 2022, 10:12 AM

It was a joke, he wasn’t actually trying to walk on

Fast chad not think fast.

I wouldn’t be so sure. A lot of athletes are coming back because the NCAA is granting a COVID year. Why not, right.

Very true. I am no longer sure.***

Are you trying to say that there are hidden gems in these open try outs and that Clemson doesn't take them seriously?

Are you also saying that if they find a diamond in the rough at one of these, that they would hold them back so they really don't get a chance?

I am not sure of the purpose of your post.

If the shoe fits. It’s very political.

Priceless. You acting like you know something about something that no one really cares about.

Think about what you are saying. All the recruiting and evaluation that is done, how many college athletes that get schollies and play at a Power 5 school come from these open tryouts?

I don’t know the exact number but am pretty confident stating the number is 74. It would be a lot higher if they timed the forty’s electronically rather than by hand where coach’s bias can influence results.

This is the most rambly thing in the world. Do you really think anyone here watched the Chad Powers video and thought that was how things are done at the real tryouts? It was just a funny video along the lines of Jared Goff's try-out, Uncle Drew, or Jeff Gordon taking that car for a test-drive. It's just a professional athlete playing around for fun.

I mean, obviously there are great players who get missed because of try-out protocols, just as there are great players who get missed in recruiting (for example, three of the best players out of SC in the last 15 years were Josh Norman (who was the best CB in the League for a couple years), Jonathan Joseph (2 time pro bowler), and Mason Rudolph (who was a decent starting QB for Pittsburgh when Big Ben went down), neither of whom were even offered preferential walk-on status at Clemson). It happens everywhere. There are far more players who think they are great players who really weren't as good as they thought (you seem to have an ax to grind given the very-specific Easley example).

And perish the thought of a school only allowing students to walk-on.

Do you really think ESPN would make that video just to be funny? They are the Worldwide Leader is Sports, not Comedy Central.

Do you also really think there aren’t dozens, if not hundreds, of players just like the four that you mentioned? If the volunteer that painted the sidelines for Easley JV games took his job more seriously and knew how to paint a straight line, an incredibly talented (albeit undersized) WR would have caught a screen pass inbounds and likely would have made three guys miss to set the single game record for yards and touchdowns assuming coach would have gone back to him a couple more times.

Instead of reading about it in the student paper, the coaches tasked with recruiting the upstate spend time watching film of a kid in Florida instead of watching a game changer locally on Thursday night.

I just find it frustrating that kids who SHOULD be on the field don’t get a chance because they don’t have a bunch of stars from sites like Rivals and On3. It’s why I don’t pay to join those sites. They contribute to the flawed system.

As for a not allowing students to walk on, why not take a look at everyone and let the good ones enroll after the tryout? What harm is there in that?

Trolls are all the same. When they can’t make a valid counter argument, they resort to insults. I’d like you to know that I have 3 POTD’s, am a published author, and was awarded Post of The Month by a media company called Message Board Geniuses.

I’ll accept your apology any time.

Is that your way of humble bragging about winning four letters? I didn’t need a nerdy jacket to validate my athletic prowess.

hard for me to see victimhood in college football open tryouts. but anything that sounds like assignment of victim status sees me questioning credibility.
