A 'bicoastal super league'?

Jul 5, 2022, 2:30 PM

No such thing as a bad idea?

One theory coming out of the West Coast now is a 'bicoastal super-league' after the Big Ten went and stunned the Pac-12 by taking their LA teams last week. From Pac-12 insider Jon Wilner (article requires email to read for free):

The conference could explore an alliance — this one legally binding — with the ACC to create a bicoastal super-league that would serve as a counterweight to the SEC and Big Ten.

“I can tell you the presidents of each league would love to be academically aligned with the other,’’ a source noted.

The merger would combine the best football brands not accounted for (Washington, Oregon, Clemson, Miami and Florida State) and relegate the Big 12 to permanent third-class status.

When asked about the travel demands, the source pointed to USC and UCLA joining the Big Ten and said, “That doesn’t seem to matter anymore.”

Why would the ACC agree?

It might not. After all, the ACC currently possesses more stability than either the Big 12 or Pac-12 because its members have bound their media rights to the conference until 2036.

But because of that lengthy grant-of-rights deal, the ACC cannot increase its media rights package without restructuring.

A merger with the Pac-12 would open the door to additional revenue.

Would it be enough?

That’s a question — one of many — for ESPN.

A great idea. Something else to consider.

No combination of teams will stop the next school from jumping to the "super conferences" once the opportunity opens up.

So the …. “Coastal Elite Conference” ?

Jul 5, 2022, 2:57 PM

Might have to work on that name?

I don’t think the Bi conference could recruit very well.

Might do better than the trans-continental conference.

In terms of Travel....the Pac has an advantage

Jul 5, 2022, 6:54 PM

The Pac 12 makes more sense to fledgling Big 12 teams from a travel standpoint; does it not?

The ACC can't really go West of Atlanta or any further North of Boston. UCF just signed with the Big 12 right? Baylor is in West Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma St, Kansas St, and TCU would probably prefer less travel or is it going to be pretty much the same?

*** You know Americans and Geography, right?

Said all that to say; if we are still worried about getting the academics aligned why not offer Navy and Army? Is Memphis moving to another conference? That's a nice-sized market?

Too little too late people; might I remind you that many people already considered the ACC too weak to compete. Unless there is specific language stating only the Big 10 and SEC can play for a championship? Sure, it would be for less money, less NIL money, etc. But, unless the language goes to specifically make it impossible, "there is always a chance"!
If it's just about the money to be had = join the Big 10. They are already the best-paying conference and they just added the 2nd largest city in the U.S. to their roster. So, even more, money is coming.

Sounds like the Sears - KMart merger to me

Sinking ships choosing to go down together rather than alone.

Oh cool, we can be part of yet another subpar league

Jul 5, 2022, 3:15 PM

Desperately trying to keep up with the BIG and SEC. Thats a hard pass!

If something is not done to improve TV revenue

Jul 5, 2022, 3:22 PM

then jumping ship is inevitable. There is no way that the big football powers (I'll let you fill in the blanks for the teams) will continue to be patient with the deal that Swoffy put together.

The ACCN is practically unwatchable. For goodness sakes, they re-run the glory days of UNC and Duke basketball during football pre and in season.

I thought jumping to the Big 12 many years ago was possible. I'm glad we didn't.

We may have to jump to the SEC just to stay relevant. I just threw up a little.

Only if Oregon and Washington are locks to stay

Jul 5, 2022, 3:25 PM

PAC would need to add Ok ST and Baylor as well.

Which is why I can totally see the ACC agreeing to it.

They can name it "Conference USA" or the "American

Athletic Conference."

And it will likely serve the exact same role that those conferences have during the P5/6 era.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Meh…

Jul 5, 2022, 4:00 PM

Nothing to exciting or much to even move that needle. If the ACC were smart they would try to poach some teams. Oregon/Washington & teams in Texas. They should be trying something….

But I still prefer we pack up our bags and join the SEC.

Another story on a potential "loose partnership" between leagues:

A source with knowledge of their conversations told me the Pac-12 leaders are now considering a “loose partnership” with another conference...

What would a “loose partnership” with the ACC look like? It could include a shared media rights deal with ESPN, who currently works with both entities. Also, it could result in the 10 remaining Pac-12 teams sticking together and the winner of that “10-team division” playing in an ACC vs. Pac-12 championship game in Las Vegas at the end of the season. Also, there could be some attractive regular-season crossover games between the entities in football and men’s basketball.

We need to be out of this idiotic league like yesterday.

I have a name for this league: The Big Mess

Jul 5, 2022, 7:14 PM

The notion this joke of a monstrosity would be a "counter weight" to the B1G and SEC is so laughable it isn't really funny.

Because the per school annual revenue would still be paltry compared to the big 2 conferences, it solves no problem at all.

I think most people are already there but soon everyone will understand that "Division 1" collegiate athletics is about to split into the top 32-40 and everyone left out.

This train will reach the destination. It cannot be stopped.

MoCity - you don't think it's pretty much already there? I mean, Oklahoma and Texas haven't joined the SEC yet. Southern Cal and UCLA are still in the Pac 12 at the time of this post.

Many people pretty much already wanted to very much dismiss anything the ACC did. But, just 2013 FSU won the NC. 16 and 18 of course Clemson won it and played for it two other times!

I mean, unless the NCAA comes out with some specific language saying those big schools like a Washington, Oregon, Clemson, FSU, Miami, Oklahoma St., N. Carolina, Nancy St, TCU, Arizona and Arizona State and some other schools not including Duke, BC, Syracuse and sorry Wake would not be enough? Then "there is a chance"!
In terms of TV shares, no. You won't compete.
In terms of competing for the ultimate trophy in the sport, "there would be a chance unless the NCAA basically comes out and says, because you aren't in these two conferences you do not get an opportunity"!
In fact, do you then just have the conference champions play each other to settle the National Championship?
Do we think that would be more interesting? Or do you think the powers that be believe that would draw more interest?
