One thing NOT being mentioned is the Cost of Attendance

Rule. Players are already getting paid. Here's how it works:
The NCAA and universities spin this as additional scholarship money, not a payment stipend. And while "technically" that's true, the NCAA argued in court that cost-of-attendance stipends were a form of "pay for play" and a threat to amateurism. Well, they lost.
Cost of attendance is the estimated extra money of the price to attend a particular college, as determined by financial aid offices. By 2015, many schools were providing all or some of their athletes with a couple extra thousand dollars a year through cost of attendance. Some coaches publicly worried that other schools' cost of attendance numbers were inflated for competitive reasons and the money would impact recruiting. Four years into cost of attendance, there are virtually NO stories about players choosing schools due to the extra stipend---but trust me, it's a factor. Not the pivotal factor in most cases---but a factor.

And it's now over $5K at Alabama.

$90? Check your math at Alabama that's over $415/month. Not for us to say but that's something (as a student) worth having. At least it would have been for me. My point was, players are already getting paid.

I do believe he was referring to the additional $1000 per year at Alabama vs. Clemson. Less than $90 a month difference isn't going to sway many choices.

They get a college education for free, plus free lodging

the best food on campus, along with a certain amount of spending money, free activities, special "tutoring" and help with classes.
For a four-year education this amounts to a whole bunch of money, which other students would love to have.
No one makes a college athlete play a sport, they do so willingly and many receive HUGE benefits for doing so.
If that's not enough, they should just quit, get a couple of jobs to help pay for college, and suffer along with many of the other college students.
Pay-for-play would eventually be the end of college football, and sports would end up being like they are in Germany where universities don't even have teams.

I was just stating the fact that the stipend is pretty inconsequential. And the difference between schools is even less meaningful.
I don't like the idea of schools paying players. But I wouldn't mind seeing the 3rd parties (video game companies, ESPN, merchandise sellers) paying these players when they use their likeness in their products. That would be the capitalistic model. If a ton of jerseys are sold for a particular player, then why shouldn't they receive a portion of the sales?

from telling an athlete "We'll buy out your jersey from these places, and you'll be guaranteed % of the profits"
A company (EA, ESPN, Nike, etc) can also target schools or players. There has to be some kind of attempt at oversight, not just allowing schools with more means to market or profit from using a name or likeness to be able to out-reach others through non-official channels

For players that live off campus (so almost everyone but freshmen) the stipend is about $1,500/month. Obviously this is used to cover housing as well, but you can still find places to rent around Clemson for $400-$500.

I believe there is also the availability of a Pell Grant based on need which totals around $6000 per year for full time students. All of a sudden you have $11,000 per year for spending money. If that’s not enough on top of a scholarship I suggest you sign up for the military to pay for your school as some of us did. Tired of the media telling us how these young people can’t afford a pizza.

If our 5* players are the ones getting the big bucks for an endorsement and the rest of the starters are not, will the performance of the 5* be hindered by the lack of blocking?

Thanks. I thought they got a small amount for living expenses but was unaware of the other funds. Although I think that it should be standardized between schools this is in a range that I think is fair.

No one cares. The top athletes are not coming to school for an education anyway.
