Playoff expansion - will it matter?

Jan 10, 2022, 8:58 AM

So this past weekend, North Dakota St won their 9th FCS national championship in 11 years. This is with a full, 24 team playoff. And still, the same team has won 9 out of 11. Not to say that it hasn't created some good matchups or exciting games (I don't know - I don't keep up much with the FCS). But if people think expanding the FBS playoffs will keep the Clemsons, Bamas, Georgias, etc from consistently being in the top 8 or top 4, then they're clearly wrong. All it will do is increase the odds of one of these teams losing a fluke game (like our Pitt game back in 2016) or suffering from attrition due to injuries. The best teams will still be the best teams. The top programs will still be the top programs. All I see it doing is making for some good matchups to get into the final 4, but the final 4 - and especially the top 2 - will see little change.

At this point it looks inevitable that there will be expansion. The other conferences are tired of seeing the SEC, Clemson and the B1G in there every year. I don't blame them. But until the other conferences find a way to be more competitive, all they're really doing is buying themselves a consolation prize.

ESPN is going to get what ESPN wants because it seems they're succeeding in their drive to basically own all of college football. I guarantee you they'll hype a Final 8 Chick-Fil-A Bowl (or any other Your-Name-Here Bowl) far more than they currently hype the regular boring ol' bowl game, where they dedicate more pre-game and halftime coverage to the coming CFP games than they do to the game that is currently at hand.

Not the point at all - at least 23 other teams have a SHOT

Jan 10, 2022, 9:02 AM

people are tired of idiots (voters) deciding the 2 teams, now 4 teams that get a shot

points. I understand that Cinderella stories are exciting, but the current format is great. Win and you're in.

win and you're in = no more than 1 school from a conference

I agree. Revisit the bylaws of the committee and make the conference championship games glorified a play in game for the four highest ranked conference champions.

Make ND join a conference.

That sounds good. More playoffs will be better for the pocket book but do not see it making much difference than what we currently see as a final 4. Probably a few in the top 10 that would have handled Cincinnati imo this year.

UGA just spanked the khaki pants off the be best the BIG10 had to offer after lifting their foot. Expanding will generate more football, but more football doesn't equal better football.

Yeah, because when you give the far better organization a month to prepare the strengths are exagerated.

Have them the week of conference championships then give a month to prepare for finals would help that

Well it's a business, so they want the nation involved. It's not about finding out who the best team is.

I’d rather watch a playoff game (regardless of it being a 4, 6 or 8 team playoff scenario) than say the normal Duke Mayo Bowl with the Coots.

We should also be concerned with total control by ESPN with no alternatives.

2 reasons expansion needs to happen...........

Jan 10, 2022, 9:12 AM

and for the record I've NEVER been a playoff expansion person, however the college football landscape has changed DRASTICALLY over the last 2-3 years to where it's imperative to at least keep MY interest.

1. Opt outs: virtually no players care to play if they're not in the playoffs. The opt outs have killed any of the non-playoff bowl games.

2. NIL & portal: With pay for play now being legal the Bamas, UGAs, Ohio States, Texas's, etc.... will now be a main stay in college football. Virtually only 10-12 teams in the country can compete with the MONEY that is involved to buy these recruits. Clemson is NOT one of those programs...............So, in order for Clemson or any other team outside those top 10-12ish richest programs to compete playoff expansion is a must...................again I hate EXPANSION, but it has to happen now.............the more the better IMO............16 would be preferable to me, but likely not likely.

Totally agree and we'll laid out. And for coaches that say it'd be too many games, then take the fcs or instate opponent games and make them non counting pre season scrimmage. Yes, there'd still be injuries but that happens if you're scrimmaging against yourself.

Re: Playoff expansion - will it matter?

Jan 10, 2022, 9:45 AM

A 12-team playoff would most likely look like this...especially if ESPN is somehow in the mix...

1 seed: SEC champ
2 seed: SEC champ game loser
3 seed: SEC team in second place in SEC west
4 seed: SEC team in second place in SEC east
5 seed: Notre Dame (just because)
6 seed: best 3-loss SEC team
7 seed: B1G champ
8 seed: Big 12 champ
9 seed: ACC champ
10 seed: next best SEC team
11 seed: best Go5 team
12 seed: PAC-12 Champ

Had this from an older discussion...need to check what 2021 would have been under the proposed expanded CFP rules...

2020 would have looked like: (Actual 2020 rank in () )
1) Bama (SEC champ) (1) - Bye
2) Clemson (ACC champ) (2) - Bye
3) Ohio State (B1G champ) (3) - Bye
4) Oklahoma (Big 12 champ) (6) - Bye
5) Notre Dame (4) - R1 Host
6) Texas A&M (5) - R1 Host
7) Florida (7) - R1 Host
8) Cinci (AAC champ) (8) - R1 Host
9) Georgia (9)
10) Iowa State (10)
11) Indiana (11)
12) Coastal Carolina (Sunbelt champ) (12)

What this proposal ignores is that the conference championships already act as round 1, mostly. In 2020 we already saw Alabama-Florida and Clemson-Notre Dame and Oklahoma-Iowa State in those conference championship games. But this format would give them yet another bite at the apple. Plus it would let teams that could not even win their conference DIVISION (let alone the conference championship) into the playoff (A&M was 2nd in SEC West, UGA was 2nd in the East)?

For exciting every upset (say Cinci over UGA in the 2020 example) that people will point to every 5 years to say "See, they deserved to be there! That's why we need 16 teams in the playoffs!" there will be boring lopsided games that had no business being played in the first place, which will end up just setting up rematches (possibly 3rd games, e.g. if ND had been ranked 7th and both Clemson and ND won their games, that would have been a 3rd game).

Killing the golden goose is what they're doing.

One positive of playoffs would be

Jan 10, 2022, 10:27 AM

that it rewards a team improving as the season goes on. Say you start out 0-3, or 3-3, or whatever - you're pretty much out of the Top 25 at that point, and maybe you've already had your big games, but since then you've started a different QB or come up with some different play calling and position arrangements or whatever, and now you're rolling. With playoffs, you have the opportunity to get rewarded for improving after a difficult start.

It might help with opt outs, but I don't know. Once these guys see the $$$ they don't see much more. If the opt out guys aren't willing to play one "meaningless" bowl game, will they be willing to play 1, 2, or 3 other "meaningless" games if they don't think they have what it takes to make the championship? 2x - 3x or more potential for risk? I don't know. I get what y'all are saying, but I don't know why a Kenny Pickett or whomever would be willing to play 2, 3 or 4 more games if they're not willing to play 1 more. Your career and that NFL money is your career and your NFL money, no matter how well you do in the post-season. They've made their resume in the regular season.

Re: Playoff expansion - will it matter?

Jan 10, 2022, 12:49 PM

I'm good with 12-16 team playoff only if the FCS games are totally eliminated. Everyone has to play 9 conference games + 3 non-conf FBS opponents (and Alabama can't pick New Mexico, New Mexico St and Akron every year). As a matter of fact, a committee/computer randomly chooses 2 of the non-conf games while the 3rd is against an instate rival (if applicable).

How cool would it be to see Clemson randomly have Oregon pop up one year and then like Iowa or Texas in other years?

And old rivals like Pitt vs Penn St, Kansas vs Missouri, Florida vs Miami are required to be played annually maybe at least once every 4 years.
